There has been an outbreak of attacks against foreign-owned businesses at an informal settlement in Kya Sands in northern Johannesburg.

Residents who have spoken to Eyewitness News said locals targeted foreign owned spaza shops on Sunday night.

The people also threatened to damage the foreigners' homes.

A Zimbabwean woman in the area said she was terrified.

"They took mealie meal, rice and things like that and they are still promising that they are going to fight us until we go," she said.

Police upped their presence there on Monday morning and encouraged immigrants not to flee their homes.

Mthethwa goes to Atteridgeville

Meanwhile, police officers in Atteridgeville in Pretoria West on Sunday said residents there cannot blame their unemployment on hard working foreigners.

On Sunday the community was given a chance to raise their concerns about foreigners with Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa.

Many residents there said illegal immigrants are stealing their jobs, homes, water and electricity, and they told Mthethwa they will take the law into their own hands if government does not address poverty, unemployment and crime.

But Mthethwa promised officers will use force to stop attacks on foreigners, adding the residents cannot blame their African neighbours for the failings of local government.

A crime intelligence officer who works in Atteridgeville agreed with the minister and said foreigners have jobs because they work hard to earn a living.

"To be honest South Africans are not hard workers. You will never see a South African cutting hair or selling cigarettes on the streets. We have to stop this because these are our brothers," he said.

Really depressing, all this poverty and not enough "good" jobs to go around.

There is no such thing as 'creating jobs'. We need innovation to bring jobs! The ratio of the innovative(creative & educated), is a far great deal lower than the people that could help them(those who have something to contribute).

And especially why should we fork out trillions to take care of people who don't even care about themselves, let alone putting our currency in the dumpster once upon a time too?


The immegrants should sort out their own problems, they can't just invade our house like this, we built it, not they. I feel for many of them, but it's not my responsibility, and if i had taken it to be so, nothing really would be fair and nothing would work either, we would give in to tyrants this way.

interesting... do you think they will stop at immegrants? when that avenue has been taken and all the foreigners chased out, what will happen next? who will be targeted next then?
 
As much as this is disturbing... it is also somewhat refreshing to see someone in the guavamint (to a degree) actually admit that some South Africans aren't hard workers....

That is the first thing that needs to be changed, ppl need to realise a job means money.... and when you're desperate, any job is a good job. When you get picky, you don't earn and it just turns into a vicious circle.
 
Sounds like some ordinary run of the mill criminals who wanted to steal some food and stuff. It's convenient that they can do it under the mask of Xenophobia because then the government can just ignore their petty crime and not send the police after them.

I'd say round them up and arrest them for theft.

Do you have ANY idea what this costs us, even excluding increase in joblessness and crime? Even so, these people don't even have passports, they can easily commit any crime they like and no body would be able to trace it back to them.

There is nobody who 'will be targeted next'(who could be targeted next and why? what are you thinking?), We are simply asserting what is ours, and that no body has a right to take it from us without our own(individual) permission.

The difference being these people vote for a government who invites these "unwanted guests" in - so how can they be called "intruders"? They should take their frustrations out on the government THEY voted in, not the foreigners.

There's a difference between sloppy border control with political refugees and inviting people to take on our jobs.

There is? So they support a neighbouring tyrant, and then are surprised when our borders are flooded with refugees? Either a) renounce the tyrant, or b) take action to stop the influx of foreigners. Instead, they do neither, and as such they are inviting desperate people into the country. And logically, these desperate people are going to take whatever work they can get. It's quite simple really. The blame lies fully with the ANC.

The problem is, most of our population are unschooled. Most even lack basic education for their job, even if it is working with bricks.
 
It's not a lack of jobs as much as it is an unbalanced load of unskilled workers. There's so much work in the Eastern Cape alone, we can't keep up. But it's skilled ARTISAN work, not for self-entitled sissies.
