Hi guys, im planning on buying this XFX 8800GT Alpha Dog.

ive got a 6600, 1 gig 800mhz ram *getting 2*

atm im using a 8500GT.

im playing games at 1200x1024 or something. on a 17inch crt. Im content with playing games at this resolution.

will that card upgrade make a big enough difference in my games?

yes a large differance, maybe consider getting a larger monitor though to see all the graphics in there glory

you see thats the problem, i might buy a 22 inch later on, but wont the g=card suffer because the resolution will have to be put up?

my thing is ive got 10k left to spend, im getting 4 installments of 2.5k a month, but i really cant wait, i want a decent g-card :)

i really just want a system that will kick Starcraft 2's ass, you think a 8800GT will suffice?

Rather wait for the 9xxx series!
Do you know when they'll be available?

I'm going to upgrade soon. For the past year and a bit I've always been waiting for the next best thing to come out. I think I'm just going to go for it now though. :)

Go for it, i have 8800GTS 320mb version and i recently got a 22" samsung and it performs quite well at that resolution, any bigger and i think my card will suffer a bit.

If you wait you will wait forever

With 1Gb RAM and an 8500GT, you would probably have to lower some settings to have reasonable perfomance. I support upgrading to 2Gb ASAP. The 512Mb 8800GT is an amazing piece of hardware, which happily runs games at 1280x0124, with eyecandy turned on. Considering that it's cheaper than the previous 320Mb 8800GTS and outperforms it, it's worth buying. And it will run SC2 fine at resolutions below 1600x1200.

The only point is that the new 9800 series cards are due out in the next 2 or 3 months (or sooner) and these are expected to perform well too. I suspect they'll cost more than R3,000 though. Thus, if you're willing to wait a few months and are comfortable with the expected price, you'll probably be happier with the newer hardware. I went from a 6800GT to an 8800GT and was very impressed by the performance.

The 8800GT is a good upgrade, once you get 2GB RAM.

If you want to spend a lot more (probably around R4000) then you can wait for the 9800, otherwise there isn't much to wait for. The mid range 9600 is worse than a 8800GT, and they usually only release the value/performance part (eg. 9800GTS) later.

Will the 1 gig 800 ram make the 8800GT suck? :(

oh i got the stats on the exact card i want, its the XFX 8800GT Alpha dog XXX edition.

It will work okay for some games with 1GB, but you'll want 2GB asap. You'll still see a huge inscrease over your 8500GT.

Why do you want that exact card? It has a small factory OC that you could do yourself very easily, and is priced above most other 8800GT's because its XFX. Go for the cheapest brand/model, they're all the same.

XFX's 8800GT's were available locally in the past month for excellent prices.

Vensters, the Alpha Dog XXX edition i hear is a very good preformer, there are 3 versions of the alpha dog.
