Xiaomi launches Apple MacBook competitor

Would've been even more Epic, with a version of MIUI for Laptops (like RemixOS) and integration with their own handheld devices.

Hackintosh'ing a laptop is rarely a simple matter, unless you're not concerned with trivialities such as wifi or a working trackpad.

Why does every thin+light laptop have to be compared to a Macbook? They don't compete with Macbooks...they compete with other Windows laptops (cos' people who want Macs, get Macs). This is not a Macbook competitor.

Neat machine nonetheless...and very well-priced. Even cheaper than the Asus UX305 which I thought was a bargain a year ago (brought similar design and hardware down to the $650 range).
 
There are 2 different models.

3499rmb and 4999rmb price points, cheaper 12" has 4g ram/128g ssd, larger 13" model has 8g/256 pci-e both have hd screens (1920x1080 resolution).

The cheaper one only has 4g ram, otherwise would be a decent enough machine, even if it is windows.
Not sure you can upgrade them though - the ram looks to be soldered in. If so, pointless for my needs.


The more expensive one has 8g ram and a 256g pci-e, and a 940m nvidia, but at that price, its encroaching on the macbook pricing. I can get a 2015 512g model macbook for 2000rmb more here in China..
For windows gaming use, it would be acceptable though.

If the cheaper one can add more ram I may get one, should be hackintoshable, intel cpu/video chipset..

Very much doubt the RAM is upgradeable...the SATA maybe if there is a free slot available and it's probably a factory job, not DIY.

The thinner they make these things, the less serviceable they become.
 
Sadly, not quite 100% stock hackintoshable for the 12.5" Mi Air or the 13.3", as the onboard wifi chipset is a no go :(

Wifi is Intel 8260AC, and there are no drivers (the github intel one someone is working on is unfinished still).
Might be able to use the m.2 socket to add a Broadcom wifi / bluetooth chip, but needs to be tested.

13.3" model, similar situation.
The NVME SSD can work with drivers.
BIOS can disable the onboard 940M and use the Intel 520.
Audio chipset is fine.
Wifi is the issue...

Oh well...

Xiaomi isn't Apple. I'll rather wait for a teardown video to see if they follow Apple and glue everything together.
