Xiaomi Mi Box / Mi Box S [Android TV OS]

My issue is that my box is not responsive so I cannot check what is eating my storage or clear caches

So, for about 2 weeks now my Mi Box says "storage running low" just after startup.
The screen is black, and this error message pops up every second for a second in the top right corner of the screen then disappears, then re appears.
I cannot access anything on the box so I cannot delete anything (I don't understand how storage is low since I have minimal apps on it).
After the set idle time the screensaver comes on as per usual but once I hit any button on the remote the black screen appears with the above error message on and off again.

A Google search does not seem to yield a solution.
Any ideas to fix this will be appreciated.

Do a hard reset, it'll wipe the device and reset it to factory defaults, you'll have to google it because I can't remember how.

Wait, I did try this... Hold 2 buttons down and something something. Did nothing unfortnately.

I'll Google it and try again though.

So I bought a replacement remote from Takealot and I cant get it to pair with the box. It is not a Xiaomi product but I have tried all the different ways of pairing but nothing works.

I guess I should try the one that Geewiz is selling as the reviews posted says it works on the MiBox S.....

if you have HDMI CEC enabled on the mi box as well as on your TV you can use the TV remote to do everything that your broken Mi Box remote does not do - in fact i have not used my Mi Box remote for the last few months - since i'm using the TV remote to control both the TV and the Mi box

99% of the functions work off the TV remote - the only one exception is that pressing the home button on the TV remote takes you to the TV operating system home page (in my instance VIDAA) instead of the mi box home BUT while controlling the mi box with the TV remote you can keep pressing the back button and it takes you easily back to the home page by exiting the app you are in - so i'm not losing a single bit of functionality by using the TV remote only - only thing is that you need to have enabled the HDMI CEC before your remote went bad (though if you are stuck for that, you could borrow my Mi Box remote for a day or two and make HDMI CEC work and continue using the TV remote thereafter)

I returned the remote to Takealot and bought an original Xiaomi remote from Firstshop which is working fine now. I will try your suggestion of using the TV remote to see if it is a better user experience .

cool - glad you came right with the return - the TV remote is a better solution only because you land up using a single remote instead of swopping remotes all over the place and having remotes cluttering up the area where you keep the remotes - but i have reached a stage where the TV remote is just as fast and snappy as the Mi remote and i have learned the buttons (they are sometimes in a different place compared to the Mi remote

We just use the Mi-Box remotes at home. TV remote is just under the TV for use in case it is needed.

I probably would have as well since the Mi remote is a lot smaller, but then to change the HDMI source becomes tricky since the Mi remote cannot do that - and i use the TV as my PC monitor as well - so the Mi remote falls short in the TV functionality department but there isn't as much functionality required on the remote for a TV box unless you use the voice functionality in which case the microphone is on the Mi remote (i don't use the voice functionality so that doesn't matter to me) hence why i use the TV remote as a semi-universal remote

the absolutely only issue is that the TV remote won't take you to the Google TV home but instead to the TV home page but that is easily overcome as i pointed out somewhere above and is something i have learned to live with

We don't have that issue, we stream everything, and the Mi-Box or 4K Streaming Stick are sole inputs, on each of the TV's we have. No need to change inputs.
 
oh and i also forgot - i don't have a fancy audio setup anymore - so i'm using the sound from the TV speakers - but there are times when i need to switch over to the headphones - so i need the TV remote to do that too since it doesn't do it automatically but does so via a setting in the menu, so just another reason for me to use the TV remote instead

Use Bluetooth Headset direct from the Mi-Box.
