You go to the Play Store and then install Plex.

No issues here running Plex on the Mi Box.
 
I think I've cracked the Wifi issue with the Mi Box. I believe the Wifi issue depends heavily on the make and model of wifi router you're using and the channel bandwidth setting you have for your wifi channel. After buying this box for myself and helping a friend buy one and set it up, I've noticed a few things.

I bought a Mi Box for myself a few months ago. I connected it to my dual-band router on the 5GHZ band. My channel bandwidth was set to 80Mhz. I was suffering from constant disconnects. I then changed the channel bandwidth to 20Mhz/40Mhz/80Mhz and the wifi has worked flawlessly ever since. This router was the Asus DSL-AC52U.

I then helped a friend of mine to set up his Mi Box. He has a DLink DIR-825. The channel bandwidth on his 5GHZ network was set to 20Mhz/40Mhz/80Mhz but he was still suffering from disconnects. I then changed it to 40Mhz, still the same story. Then I changed it all the way down to 20Mhz and it worked flawlessly since then.

So it seems that depending on the make and model of router, and what channel bandwidth you select, it can affect how well the WIFI connection on the Mi Box performs. There must be a problem with the compatibility between the Mi Box wifi radio and the wifi radio of the router. However the lower you set the channel bandwidth the more likely it is you will get the wifi working with your router.

Also add to your list, bluetooth soundbar. We figured out that on 2.4ghz and a close-by soundbar, also doesn't mix. Changing the wifi channels or the band to 5ghz, fixed the issue of disconnects and DSTV now buffers.

I just don't use wifi for streaming. Too many little niggles.

Unfortunately there's nothing you can do about DSTV buffering, that's clearly an issue with Multichoice's streaming servers being overloaded and nothing to do with the Mi Box. The 2.4Ghz band is far too crowded to stream reliably. Even in a typical spread out suburban setting you're going to see a number of neighbour's networks overlapping yours no matter what channel you choose. In an apartment block it's even worse. And then as you mentioned it also overlaps with Bluetooth, Microwave Ovens, wireless telephones, baby monitors, etc.

5Ghz seems to work well as long as you can find the right channel width that works between your Mi Box and your make of router.
 
I got the Mi Box today (from Takealot).

Tested....buffering. I am not interested in cabled connection.

I will sell it for R1,000

The Deezer app on Android TV seems only to work when the Mi Box is connected on Wi Fi.
Doesn't play any songs when you got a wired connection. It is just weird.

Its a long shot - but anyone else have this problem?

Works perfectly here. I don't have a single niggle with my Mi yet. Looks like I'm just lucky.

Have you disabled wifi?
 
Never had WiFi problems or buffering. Only problem is that my data on Rain is running out quickly now that I'm on leave. Damn Netflix :p

I only use wifi on my Mi Box so I don't have this problem, but I did have this problem on a previous wired Android box I had. If I remember correctly it's because the Deezer app expects a wifi connection on Android, not a wired connection.

Only thing that buffers is DSTV now on mibox
And the occasional dodgy stream.
