Xiaomi Mi Box / Mi Box S [Android TV OS]

Try MOBDRO. Not sure if you can still download it.

Yeah official site is at https://www.mobdro.bz/

Mobdro is for live channels though and buffering and quality not too great. You can however watch nice documentaries on channels like national geographic and other channels from the UK / USA which would be equivalent to the ones on dstv. (No VOD for tv series though, only the episodes streaming live)

Another good app for live channels that are similar to mobdro is livenettv (official site is https://www.livenettv.sc/ but seems down at moment, can google but be careful where you download)

Does anyone know if its possible to see what resolution Netflix is playing content WITHOUT watching test patterns?
Like the smart TV's require just to press "info" to see the stream resolution... is there any way with android?

Don't think so but as far as the "info" button thing - that is not accurate because the tv will display what your hdmi cable is syncing at (and what is set in the android settings resolution settings) and not what the real streaming resolution is.
Far as I can see the only real accurate thing is the test patterns.

I think he means Smart TVs (ie internal apps) - and yup, shows the resolution

Correct. I assumed he was talking about the netflix app on android.

Another thing a lot of people dont know is that kodi a lot of the times will show you 1080p in its display settings but if you play a 4k file on a box that has the capability, it actually plays in 4k, this can only be tested by using a special test pattern that was designed for kodi. In such a case though the "info" button on the tv should show 4k and you can ignore the kodi info screen that states 1080p

Some alternative certified boxes to keep in mind for future with new generation amlogic cpus and more ram / storage (pricing almost same as current xiaomi)?
Anyone have any experience with one of these?

Edit: not netflix certified but I know of an apk that will work with the standard remote but upto 480p. The netflix kodi addon works upto 540p or if your smart tv has netflix you can obviously do it in hd / uhd

Just a heads-up: Neither of them are Netflix certified.

Yea the hardware is good - but not having Netflix certification is massive. To my knowledge, there are only 4 x devices locally (ie you don't need to import) that have Netflix and Google.

You should try stick to those

I used to sell android tv boxes and its not always 'massive' if netflix is not an issue to the individual. Not everybody wants it. Some people use netflix on their tv and all other apps on the tv box. Also some people don't care for anything higher than 540p.
For their VOD needs others used premium apps like my family cinema which has even more content than netflix although it is not a 100% legal app but it runs off premium servers, all content on it being 720p or higher but no 4k though.

I know of the Mi Box S (not sure if the original Mi Box is still in in stock, too) the Ematic (Jetstream) 4K and?

I use my Mi-Box with a monitor without speakers. Any recommendations, on how I might use one of these sound bars, and connect to it via HDMI instead of via Bluetooth.

Check this out on takealot: JBL Studio Sound Bar 2.0 - Black
