No it's a special version of XP with things removed and added to make it better.

...by all accounts of what I have found online in my brief search the black edition is full of viruses and trojans and does not install properly!

I ran many black editions without problems. run a virus scan after installing.

never had any problems either. Worked just fine for me. I guess it depends if you know what you are doing.

Dude let me put it this way, i bought a netbook and xo was slower than windows 7 and windows 7 had aero enabled.

It has 512mb ram but I'm gonna upgrade it to 2gig

You can simply use your own product key to make it legal. And I have never found any viruses on it. I suppose there might be versions with viruses, but I have never come across one. I guess that was a rumour started by Microsoft to scare people away from using it.

The only turn off is that most people like to configure their own PCs the way they like them.
