I have been doing this since Windows 3.11 for workgroups but now a days I am having a nightmare with sharing files over a network using Windows XP. WTF did MicroSUCK do with these d@mn security updates. I share the desired folders then try to map these drives as per usual and NOTHING:mad:

Computer A can see computer B but not the shared directories. Computer B cannot see Computer A at all on the network. I have even tried via the IP address. I set the trusted IP range in Norton Security also still NOTHING

I must be losing my touch.

Any idea or suggestion please

Norton Security

Uninstall Norton (it is a piece of crap)/or disable it, and disable all firewalls on computer A. Can you see computer a now?
Is it on a domain or not?
The shared files sits on A or B?

The 2 computers are in a workgroup. Desktop is connected via Ethernet & laptop in connected WiFi. I thought it might be NORTON. Problem is this is on a clietns machine I would LOVE to unistall Norton and throw it far away.

WTH is up with Norton & McAfee they just suck when you wanna network. Kaspersky on the other hand is a all round better security suite but handles networking ad\nd file sharing like a trooper.

Thanks guys I will implement the advice given

Norton is teh_suxx

1. Uninstall Norton (or disable it)
2. Ensure no firewalls are active.
3. Create user piet with password pompies on both machines
4. Share directories/folders, assign full rights to piet
5. Ensure network addresses is on the same subnet - eg
PC A is 192.168.10.10/255.255.255.0 and PC B is 192.168.10.20/255.255.255.0

Then it should and must work.

Are you able to ping either IP?
What are the results of a "net view" in your command prompt?

If you can't see the other PC with net view - are both computers in the same Workgroup?
Once in the same workgroup, try \\computername\folder in your IE Browser or Windows Explorer.
