Hi Guys
I work for a small/medium sized company and we're looking to upgrade our systems (99% is still using Win2K). We're comparing the cost of buying and leasing.
I need to draw up a tender comparing the options of buying and leasing, so I need to know if anyone can help me with finding the price or rather where we can purchase Windows XP and Office. I just need the prices so that I can draw it up for about 30 Desktops. Any place in Cape Town is suitable.

AFAIK You can't buy XP off the shelf any more. So its either stick with win2k, vista or perhaps a linux distro.

Yeah, XP is no longer on sale per se, you'd be lucky to find a shop or company who still has in stock. The manufacturers who offer the option to downgrade to XP from Vista have a logner period of time, but eventually Microsoft will end up killing all sales.

Problem in your case is that the jump from 2K to XP isn't so large, but from 2K to Vista will be huge. Most likely you will buy Office 2007 as well, and that interface will take time for people to learn.

Not a nice situation to be in

Yes it's a nightmare and Linux isn't a real option because our staff would take forever to get use to it plus the applications we use are windows only, we've already tried migrating to Open Office but people are so lazy to learn and I mean the difference between the 2 isn't even that great. Ah well, the higher ups are gonna be paying through their A** I'm just a messenger boy! :D

Linux

I think the learning curve from your current situation to Linux boxes running OpenOffice will be less than moving to Vista with Office 2007. Not to mention the cost savings.

The transition is quite easy, even with inexperienced computer users who took the change in their stride.

Vista, err... is a big no-no at the moment.
