Why did they never sell this OS as a standalone purchase? Was there a decent reason?

You know whats REALLY odd... XP Media Center is XP Pro + Media Center app.... BUT, here's the odd part, XP Media Center is cheaper than Pro?

xrapix, you are wrong. without the ability to join a domain xpmce wasnt much of an xppro with added bits.
it is much more an xphome with some pro parts tacked on, and the mce side.

dolby, it was OEM only for a number of reasons, but mainly because most consumers wouldve tried it out using non-qualified parts/drivers/codecs and end up having a sour impression, so microsoft made it OEM only so that the OEM's can qualify allt he hardware and ensure it worked properly before it got to the consumer, and *hopefully* the consumer would have a positive impressions of xpmce, which was important as it was part of the MS digital connected home initiative.

if mce failed miserably (and looking ap mce related message boards it wouldve failed if it was a consumer product) then quite a lot of what microsoft is doing now wouldnt have existed.

if you think this is incorrect, then just ask yourself how many mce questions are on this small part of the internet (myadsl), and how many people have given up and used xppro+(some other app) to achieve similar functionality.

edit: one other snippet i jsut remembered, regarding the licensing fee...microsoft wanted OEM's to ship media center by default instead of xphome, so relaxed the hardware requirements (wasnt necessary to have a tuner built in) and the actual cost of the item was less than xphome for quite some time...to promote mce usage, and allow OEM's the chance to upsell customers to tv tuners etc.

Huh? My media center is on domain?!

Also, not to sure what you're saying, but Media Center has been quite successfull.

@!!DV!! you can install Media Center onto XP Pro, its probably not legal though.

Not sure what you mean by that, it has a computer account on the domain, and belongs to the domain with no issues?

This is my setup in Cape Town.

Johannesburg is running Vista.

Can I connect a new PC running Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 to a work network or domain?
While you can access network resources on a work network or a domain, you cannot join a Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 PC to the domain. PCs running Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 are designed specifically for home use. Windows XP Professional features, specifically Domain Join and Cached Credentials (Credentials Manager for logons) are not included. As a result, you will be prompted for your logon user name and password to access network resources after you reboot or log back on to the PC. In addition, file shares or network resources that are set to require a domain-joined PC for access will not be available. Remote Desktop and Encrypting File System support are still included.

(of course, hacks exist to get it onto a domain proper, but that isnt the point of this discussion)

p.s. it is semi-successful, that is what i said. but if the product was for all and sundry to play with, THEN i am sure it wouldve flopped. by making it OEM only and controlling the environment microsoft ensured it would work out long term.

Thats odd, I didn't even know it can't join a domain, just joined it up and no problem... maybe a service pack did something?

no, no service pack changed that status.

the is a difference between joining a domain and simply accessing the resources on a domain.
mce can access, it cant join.

right click my computer, select properties, select computer name, click "change"
and voila...no domain option exists..(xppro has "member of...domain/workgroup selection, whereas mce does not)

Dude... I'm qualified in various IT certifications, including Microsofts MCP qualifications, I think I would know if my media center is on the domain.

Yeh... want to compare my qualifications and my salary to yours? I'll bet you I get double what you do.

Obviously you're one of 'those'.

if you close your mouth and click around on your computer, and you find out your mce version is 2004 (i'll leave that up to your certificates to figure out where to find the mce version number) then you have a point, but mce2k5 removed domain joining as it doesnt work correctly with fast user switching and extenders, and mce2k5 was the first version to work with extenders, but you already knew that, didnt you.

and seeing as mce2k5 was the only version the allowed to be sold as OEM via distributors, you really cant have anything else unless it is a torrent special.

p.s. if you tell me your answer is 2002 I am just gonna laugh at you.

p.p.s. in a d1ck measuring competition regards salaries I would rather keep my mouth shut if I was you.

Yeh... we can see how grown up you are, half of what you type doesn't make sense....

And yes, Einstein , I know which version I'm running, considering I've been using it for ages...

Oh, and as for your p.p.s.... I have nothing to worry about... mine will be twice as big as yours, my dick, and my salary.

so, which version is it then? as that will help explain your confusion,
if you know it, let us know, so i can apologise that you mislead me.

oh, and I am curious, what do you earn? c'mon, make me jealous, you know you want to..because whomever earns the most is obviously right (at least, that is the point you are attempting to make)

Huh? It's 2005... the same as its always been...

Wether or not its stated that 2005 can join a domain or not, mine joined without a hitch... if it's a fluke or not, I don't know, but it runs quite happily on a domain at home.

you can only join a domain during the install time, as the installer was ripped from xppro.
you cant change the domain you are on, you also cant leave a domain, join a workgroup, then go back to a domain.

you can join a domain by hacking the registry.

if mce2k5 is on a domain (using any of the methods above) then mce extenders wont work properly. which makes it pointless as the core feature set of 2005 was the extender ability

sorry for the history lesson, but i'll stand by what i say, and google, and microsoft (and wiki, for whatever that is worth) say
mce2k5 cant join a domain, in the way that xp pro can. it isnt intended, it isnt supported and there is no gui to manage domain settings.
the same holds true for vista home premium

so how much do they pay you?

Yeh... we know how perfect Microsoft products are... I mean, God forbid there's a flaw somewhere that'd allow you to join a domain, or a screwed up service pack that enabled the functionality, all this will never happen because MS software releases are always a 100% flawless.
