Xp32-bit to win7 ultimate 64-bit...

What i did when i only had 1 hdd is to partition it in 2 sizes eg one 30GB for win and apps etc.I did this with partition magic pro, should be allot of alternatives now though

shuldnt be
but alchahol is a pain in the ass
gave me nightmares for vista and win 7

quake 3 is abit old so mite not work
16 bit apps > 32 bit OS
32 bit apps > 64 bit OS

16 bit <> 64 bit OS

only the realy old stuff shuldnt work

I have been using win 7 64 bit since it was released and i still havent found a game or program that doesnt work, seems the x86 emulation is perfect then ;)

Can i just insert disk and it will upgrade without formatting or must i do a fresh install?just asking w.r.t my games/music/videos...

When installing Windows 7, select the Custom install feature as it will keep all your media in the Windows.old folder. Unfortunately you would still be required to reinstall all your applications.

Formatted 500gb,installed win 7: 25 minutes flat.Holy hell that was fast!

That's actually slow if you compare it to Ubuntu etc which also includes a full office suite & other apps, not to mention the installer is also way better wrt options.

True. But wrt XP's format/install time on a 500gb HDD towards Win 7's format/install time,it's quite quick. If you take into consideration that on XP it would take roughly 2-2.5 hours to do full format and installation.

There is no upgrade, if that's your question. There are a number of tutorials on how to do it and Microsoft have this Easy Transfer gizmo that really works well BUT...

The short of it is to run the tool that checks out your system. You connect everything to your machine, run the software and it will give you a report telling you what hardware and software will work, what won't and what drivers you'll need to hunt down.

You then run the transfer thingy to another machine or an external drive. It'll take docs and file settings.

You can then run the Windows 7 as a customised installation. All of your old Windows stuff will be saved - not that you can rewind, but if you need stuff.

BIG QUESTION before you start. Where is your email? If you are using Outlook you should be okay. If you are using Outlook Express you have a heap of pain waiting for you. I suggest that you install Windows Live Mail before you install Windows 7. Get your email into that so when you go over to Windows 7 it'll be sorted. An export from Outlook Express should work but it is a pain to get it sorted out.

would I benefit if installing another 4gb RAM?

I think that you may need to define 'benefit'. The short answer is yes, there is a benefit. But whether you'll get val ue for that benefit will depend on what you are going to do with the machine.

I suppose the other side is if you are never going to have more than 4GB RAM then it might we wise to use the 32 bit version. I suppose what are you going to use your machine for will drive your decision making process.
