I think that you may need to define 'benefit'. The short answer is yes, there is a benefit. But whether you'll get val ue for that benefit will depend on what you are going to do with the machine.

I suppose the other side is if you are never going to have more than 4GB RAM then it might we wise to use the 32 bit version. I suppose what are you going to use your machine for will drive your decision making process.

Thought he was talking about adding 4GB on top of the 4GB he already has.

I don't think that the extra 4GB will be of the beneift per rand that you are asking about. The conversion tends to be quite heavy on disk I/O.

It might be of more bebenfit if you got better (lower latency) memory.

I am not any sort of expert but what I understand is that the HDMI cable will transfer both audio and video. The DVI cable transfers just the video and it should be at whatever resolution you are pumping out of your graphics card. Your screen has a native resolution - i.e. a resolution at which it is most comfortable - if you mismatch this resolution some device will be working a bit of overtime in order to get things to fit.

Now, if you are playing a Bluray on your PC how do you get the best audio out of your machine. Usually you'll be using your PC speakers and AFAIK the sound quality will be downgraded to DVD quality - which is pretty good but not what you may have on a BD. This is where the cards like the Xonars come to the party - they give you BD output.

So, as I understand things, if you are just taking video from your pc to your screen DVI is absolutely fine. If you are taking audio to your screen you'll need the HDMI if you are able to get that quality of sound out of your PC.

Perhaps - but video conversion takes a heap of real estate in terms of storage space and the SSDs are fairly expensive at the moment, relatively speaking. He might get a 32GB SSD for the price of 4GB RAM. Perhaps he should save the money until things change?
