Hi guys,

Yesterday I bought myself a new HD LED tv and to go with that a HD PVR decoder.

I already have a SD PVR decoder and obviously I want to make use of Xtraview in order to use both the SD and PVR decoders on at least 2 TVs.

I just want to verify with you guys if I have the right equipment / cables in order to do this:

1x ABMS 2x4 multiswitch
3x F-type cables

So far I've connected the dual LNB cables from the dish to the multiswitch, and 2 of the F-type cables to multiswitch and the other two ends to the "Satellite 1" and "Satellite 2" connectors at the back of the HD PVR decoder. Now according to the guy in the shop where I bought it from, the third cable is then used to supply the "heartbeat" connection between the HD PVR and SD PVR.

Now a couple of questions that I have:

1) Shouldn't the SD PVR also have two cables that run from the multiswitch to the SD PVR (where the dish originally were connected to) ?

2) Where do I connect the "heartbeat" cable between the two decoders ? I'm aware of the RF out and RF in ports on the HD PVR, but on my SD PVR there isn't a connector marked as "RF in" or "RF out"

3) The two cables connected to the terrestrial atenna and TV1/TV2 outputs on the SD PVR, do they function as the "RF in" and "RF out" ?

If they do, which one is then classified as "RF in" and which as "RF out", as I gather that either one of them will be used as the "heartbeat" connection with the HD PVR.

4) An SLX splitter. What does it do, and do I need one for my setup ?

Sorry for the noob questions, I'm struggling to register on DSTV's website (I'm still in their moderation queue of sorts) so I can't download the damn Xtraview technical manual, hence my reason for posting here. :o

Any advice/suggestions welcome.

Thanks

1) Yes
2) Do you not have an antenna out type plug on the SD pvr? It goes there.
3) that's the ones. You can use either
4) wtf is that. I don't think so.

Once you have all the cabling in place you need to call them and they'll talk you through the software setup.

As above :)

Xtraview is easy to setup physically, you will spend more time on the phone with MC trying to activate the bloody thing than you will running all the cabling.

Simple
2 cables from LNB go into the 2x4 Multiswitch.
4 cables out of multi switch 2 into HDPVR and 2 into SDPVR
The heart beat cable goes into either RF in or out of HD PVR and into the terestrial antenae of the SD PVR

Heres the Xtraview Manual link:

Ah, thanks for confirming isie :)

I'll need to buy 2 more cables then for connecting the multi switch with the SD PVR then I should be good to go.

Thanks everyone for your input, much appreciated :D

is that really related to OLD/NEW PVR though?

cause the Xtraview installation guide thing still shows 4 cables and no mention of new/old HD, but they mention the various SD models. (well 2 SD)

my query is also in regards to an Xtraview installation, but has to do with 2 HD-PVR (1 watch 1 rec if not mistaken with the new models). at the moment we have 1 HD and then the very 1st SD connected together, but now want to find out if it would suffice for 1 LNB splitter, probably an 8??, with 4 cables going to each PVR?

reason being we were told installation was included, but now apparently have to pay R350 for a multi-switch and then anything over 25m cabling, about R7/m.

the main PVR is basically on other side of house but 2nd PVR CAN be placed almost right below the dish.

any help you guys can supply would be awesome. don't want to get ripped off with this.

Old hd pvr needs 4 satellite cables. Newer one needs 2.

You only need enough cables from the LNB to populate each of the LNB ports on the PVR.... so the SDPVR is 2 cables, and the HDPVR 2 is also 2 cables... and you need 1 cable to run between the 2 decoders.

looking here: [EDIT: see shouldn't link direct]

on PAGE 30 OPTION 2 looks about right, but now you guys say only 2 needs to go into each decoder.

INSTALLATION 3A on PAGE 17 is basically how the setup will be.

You will need 5 cables in all it seems (I'm assuming you have a multiswitch already)...

so from the Multiswitch you will take two cables to the SD PVR and 2 to the HDPVR... then you will have 1 extra cable that runs between the 2 decoders for the heartbeat.

and I wonder why I failed HG in school :p

@TB will be 2 HD-PVRs but it sounds like it will still be same.

well assuming have multi, but then again I have no idea what it looks like in the roof :o

will go dicect it bit more tomorrow

you can DIY this.
same setup as i told stonecold the current HDPVR only needs 2 cables, so in total you only need a 2x4 multi xswitch and some cables

2 cables from LNB go into the 2x4 Multiswitch.
4 cables out of multi switch 2 into HDPVR and 2 into SDPVR
and the hear beat in the rf in/outs

Which HDPVRs thought, that determines everything.
