I need some help with the installation of Xtraview. I’ve got an existing 1110 decoder in my lounge.

So last week I bought a new 46” HDTV and HD PVR. My idea is to install HD PVR in lounge and move existing decoder to bedroom. The cable run from lounge to bedroom is about 30m. Now, I’ve done some homework, looking into all the different installation options. I assumed I would need a twin LNB, 2x4multi-switch and some cable.

The cables would then run from twin LNB on dish to 2x4 mutli-switch and then to 2xcables to HD PVR and 1xcable to 1110 decoder. Then from HD PVR to 1110 decoder in bedroom for ‘heartbeat’.

So, I got some quotations and got prices that varied between R2400 and R3200.

So, I’ve got the following questions:
  1. Is the installation method described above correct?
  2. What is the maximum length for the ‘heartbeat’ between decoders?
  3. Is the pricing more or less fair? The quotations I got seems a bit excessive. I know http://www.hdcabling.co.za/lnb-multiswitch-slx-dish-kit-c-32.html has 2x4 switches for R200 and twin LNB for R200 and RG6 cabling for R3.50/m. So material works out to about R650. Surely labour can’t be R1800 for about 2 hours work?

sounds correct yes and 30m heartbeat should be fine, mine is further.

as for installer pricing can't really speculate myself, did mine myself.

So how long did it take you to self-install?

depends on your ceilings etc, my ceiling is a pain so took a while and runs were more than 30m etc

mine took about 2-3 hours to run cabling, change lnb, do connections etc but if you saw my roof you would know why

Thanks. Maybe I should just go the self-install. Can't bring myself to pay R2400:wtf: for installation when I can get all the material for just R650.

where you based? perhaps someone can recommend a reasonable installer in your area?

Do it yourself it's not that hard
1) Make sure you have enough of those silver connectors that's on the end of the cable, I had to stop and go buy me some more.
2) Make sure you have enough cable
3) Remove the LNB from the dish, make sure that the twin LNB matches the exact position of the original LNB (Very Important) take photos of the original position if you have to.
4) Connect the two cables to Dish, Connect the same two cables to your splitter (this is probably marked as LNB)
5) Connect the 3 cables to the splitter (on mine it is marked as receiver) and 2 of the 3 cables will go to the HDPVR (Ports marked: satellite in 1 & satellite in 2), and 1 will go to the other Decoder.
6) Connect the heartbeat cable from the HDPVR (RF IN) to the DSD decoder (RF out)
7) Connect the decoders to the TV's ( I suggest connecting the TV with an HDMI cable to get the best picture)
8) Phone Multichoice to activate

Did mine last weekend and a bit every night.

From putting up the dish and getting it right to the extra view etc.......

I can not afford what they want to charge ........

Just an update. Installed the twin LNB and multiswitch, with 2 cables to the HD PVR this weekend. No problems. Took us 2 hours. And that’s with beers. Imagine how fast it would have been if there were no beers involved :D.

Actually, my signal quality is 98%, up from 91% :). So, this weekend it is the Xtraview installation. Can’t see why companies want to charge so much. One of the companies quoted me R700 for the installation to the HD PVR only; and the price excluded the LNB and multiswitch :wtf:.

Did not know you can connect rf-out to rf-out for heart beat. If so, it will be cool.

guys,,
I require a bit of assistance. I have an existing PVR (view 1, record 1).
I will like to know if I will be able to connect an Explorer decoder as extra view, by way of a Multi-switch, or do I have to upgrade to a 4 way LNB?

The Expplora comes with its own multiswitch.
So its easy peasy

Sorry for the umm... thread hijack but would I be able to replace the 'master' HD PVR in an XtraView setup with an Explora? i.e. just swop the physical devices and then call them to activate it? Or would I need anything else?

Yup, you can, but dont disconnect them just yet. Call the call centre & get them to break the link, then disconnect and connect up the Explora

Yes, there will be en extra cable that you'd not use though. The Explora uses only one cable (called a unicable) instead of the two the HD-PVR uses.

Aaah. Thanks
