Xtreamer Pro - where?

Well that's more than enough.

I tried Boxee about 6 months ago. Looked great, but I just didn't find it as user-friendly as MediaPortal. Probably a newer release out by now, maybe I'll give it a go again.

Yeh - expensive case, but the insides are quite a few years old and don't handle HD very well - hence the reason for looking elsewhere.

I paid in total R1950. Media Centre Case = R200, 400watt PSU = R150, MB = R450, Dual Core 2.7ghz CPU = R650, Gfx Card with Hdmi out = R400, remote control = R100. Had some extra ram that I used.

does your htpc run without a hdd? the mede8er is just over R2000. It is small, portable and looks modern.

wanted to use the xtreamer pro as a secondary player only, but if there is not good support, well....

Erm, no... but you also need a harddrive for something like a Mede8er. And my HTPC case is also small and looks modern. No idea why you would want to move around your media centre setup.

The xtreamer has some nice features and I almost bought one, BUT:

The xtreamer is made by the same people who made the Mvix.
The Mvix is dead in the water with no support, no firmware updates to even enable promised functionality let alone bug fixes.
In a years time you end up with a dead product and they're on to making the "NASsinator" or whatever.
No, I wouldn't touch the xtreamer with a barge pole.

Actually no, you don't.

I don't have a hdd in my Mede8er atm. I stream everything from my media server.
You do need the media files stored on a hdd somewhere, but that could easly be your pc, an external drive or even a flash drive.

-1 for Xtreamer pro.

does the xtreamer pro handle usb dvd-rom or blue-ray support?

Erm, ok... so you DO need a harddrive. Doesn't matter if it's actually in the device or not. You can use something like a 20gb drive for a media centre pc if you want to stream everything. Still works out cheaper than something like a Mede8er.

Go one better. I currently run my HTPC from an ubuntu 8GB flash drive. You can use something like this, so there is nothing sticking out, the drive is in the case :)

Not really. Unless you have an old pc lying around you can use. Then you are still going to have performance issues with an old pc. Not to mention speed issues with a 20gb hard drive.

Cheaper maybe, better? NO. I have done the HTPC thing. I have streamed via the PS3and the 360. For R1099 ex vat for the playonHD (or even the Mede8er tho its more expensive) is worth every cent. Show me where you can build a decent HTPC for that price?
Even then you have to build it, set up the os, cry over the codecs. The PlayonHD just works. No mess no fuss.

Performance issues? Like what? I currently have an old 20gb drive that I use for the OS. What speed issues am I supposed to be experiencing? It's definitely A LOT faster than using that slow-ass PlayonHD.

Check my previous post's about the price thing. All equipment (except the drive) was bought for under R2000 incl vat. And what's the issue with building it and setting it up? I also only have one codec installed, and everything works. No mess, no fuss.

Are you watching HD? are you experiencing full 7.1 surround sound? I'm sure you mean one codec pack installed. I can't see how you can be watching everything off one codec. Unless you recode everything
Besides R2000 including vat is still more than 1099 ex vat.

Yes, 1080P HD. I'm using passthrough for all my sound, so my pc does nothing with the sound, everything gets done by die av receiver.

It's a couple of hundred rand more, still cheaper than the Mede8er and Popcorn Hour. But for all the extra functionality, speed, etc. it's definitely worth it. And it looks A LOT better.

I'm using XBMC, so I have full 1080p output, and digital audio pass-through to my av receiver. All without installing a single codec. Only one app. Remote works out the box
Using a cheap Pentium D chip, and a R370 Nvidia 210 GTS, which includes HDMI out. Hi-Def videos are decoded by the card, not the CPU, so playback is perfectly smooth.

That being said, a HTPC takes longer to setup than a media player, and it helps to be technically inclined. The rewards are worth it in the end.
It's also nice that I can use the same machine to encode my movies from DVD while I'm at work.

is all this software still in a windows environment? I just hate it when you still need wait for windows to boot. Does the graphics card output its video directly to hdmi?

Hi guys...am I correct in understanding that the graphics card actually does the work of "playing" the movie and not the cpu? I have seen a few pci-e cards for about R500 that are 512mb ram, hdmi + dvi out, etc. all capable of pushing out a 1080p picture...would this work in a standard pc??? I have a P4 3.0HT, 1gb Ram, 915GUX MB, etc...Am I correct in assuming that I would also require a media centre software to run the media part of it???

Sorry for the question and jacking the thread...

I have a MVIX (MX-780HD) and want an upgrade to something better and more recent.
I'm hesitating between Xtreamer Pro and Mede8er.

Heard Xtreamer Pro has been produced from MVIX people.
Honestly, i hate MVIX: no updates, no support, nothing.

Which one should i buy?
