For the same price, R599 p/m, one can get dsl384, and a 3GB account

From that point, an extra 3GB costs R250, whereas with iBurst, its R399??
the service levels expected are consistent, whereas iBurst, it fluctuates between 5KB to 40KB?
P2P heavily shaped/capped on iBurst, less heavily prioritised on DSL???
Iburst startup cost +R2500, dsl, -R1000???
+5 disconnections a day on Iburst, 1 disconnection every 24hr on DSL???
hardly any calls to support on DSL, 2 hours a week on iBurst???

the list goes on, as I can see, the only good reasons to stay with iBurst, are mobility, and if someone enjoys shooting themselves in the foot, to be AntiTelkom.

Apologies, I just realised the decrease in dsl384 only happens in August, so for the next 2 months it would work out to be R100 more expensive per month (Until more bandwidth is needed)
Well, it still works out cheaper and more reliable to be on dsl

The quick answer is that not everyone can get ADSL, and the long answer is that some refuse to do business with the devil...

i burst seldom gives me problems. it usually happens at the beggening of each month that 'something' goes wrong. but i would say for me 90% of the time i am happy with it and it's speeds.

granted i very seldom use p2p, mainly ftp and http which suits my requirements.

but adsl is certainly my next move when iburst gets saturated with more and more users.

Me straying slightly o/t for this thread, but would you consider another wireless service after iBurst, something like HSDPA with Vodacom or MTN, or WiMax with Vodacom or Telkomonopoly...?

[that is ignoring per MB pricing since that's not available yet, but assume it was comparable to ADSL ISP account pricing]

Assuming I'm allowed to put my 2cents in, having been with MyWireless, I would be prepared to go with Vodacom or MTN no problem.

They would have to match / beat the price of ADSL, the speed and the data first however.

Any other wireless companies, no matter how large they are and how much backing they have, I won't touch until a year down the line when I can see they are worth it.

With Vodacom and MTN you know your dealing with companies that know how to roll out effective services and have knowledge of customer service.

It's clear to me that Sentech were not and I'll keep quite about iBurst because I know nothing about it, as I can neither read nor form my own opinions based on other peoples experience ... ;)

LOL, a pity that certain iBurster forumites have this "us & them ADSL people" 'tude, methinks [post=227606]it stems from that agoraphobia I was talking about...[/post]:(

well... i have been with sentech and now iburst but never adsl. the reason why i like the wireless option is because i move around alot (ever since 9/11). i like the mobility of wireless but certainly not the competency of the two companies i have used thus far.

would i try another wireless service? well i think i have finally settled down so proabably not. both experiences have not been good, but this far wbs have been far better then sentech.

dorris, to answer your question all I can say is iburst works for me and is far faster than adsl.

So far I have no real complaints and until the day it goes goofy I will keep using it.

Maybe I'm just lucky, but hey who cares it works for me. :p

The only disconnection I've had is when I've switched the modem off to use elsewhere which is something ADSL users cannot do.

yeah ditto mrH, dorris cuz its fast and even thought theres the cap I still manage to do alot more than 9Gb a month plus I don't wanna go backwards, from 1mbit to 384?? no thanks, i guess if i wasn't getting what I paid for I'd use adsl but i don't get disconnected daily, I get my speed and I get my bandwith so i'm happy

Constant service level from adsl? You are delusional.
iBurst (WBS) has peering with UUNET (largest IP carrier globally) and IS. I've been using iBurst in CT, JHB and PTA and the slowest international download speeds I've experienced were around 20Kb/s. I consistently download at around 100Kb/s.
Once one's cap is reached, you are throttled to 64Kbit/s whereas DSL becomes useless.

More bs. Telkom DSL is shaped fullstop.
I have never had to call iBurst tech support. OK, so the initial cost is high, but that's possibly because there's one single hardware manufacturer. The cost is however comparable to iBurst internationally.
Please use single punctuation, there's no need for multiple marks (???).

You must enjoy waiting for months for your DSL service to be activated. I didn't and will never again.

a) No ADSL around here
b) iBurst is working well (no problems, except yesterdays problems)

I chose iburst because I've had endless trouble with Telkom when my phone line goes down. The last time it took them 3 weeks to fix. With Iburst, at least I have internet when I don't have a phone line.

It's nice to see some positive replies for a change instead of the same people whining here day after day, week after week about the same old things.
Since it seems obvious that iburst will never work for some people, instead of the constant whine why not just DEGRADE to telkoms SLOWER adsl.

I was wondering when users with good connections would decide to post, then again I guess most of us don't have the same gripes or problems.

yeah sometimes i feel this forum is more about justifying why i chose iburst over adsl to adsl users. regardless of what you use in this country nothing is 100% perfect, we just don't have that luxury but if iburst works for you, if you are one of those people, and whos to say that the majority arent happy, then iBurst is a much better option than adsl, better for speed, reliability (yes, you read right, if your iburst works you don't get disconnected at all, never mind once a day), price, mobility, no waiting etc

The only thing adsl has over iburst... is better ping times, but you know what, I get pings as low as 40ms and 50 - 60 with 70ms peaks on average, so theres really no need to change.

dorris: cause for me iburst is faster than any adsl i have ever used (not like this for everyone) Its mobile, so it fits just spanky with my laptop, and I know telkom dont have direct access to tap or record what I am doing (personal paranoria). While I know telskum still make money off me... its that much less

Slimothy, I never noticed any disconnection similar to you, but then I'm on a wireless router that auto dials.
Must admit it's always been connected whenever I use it, and I spend a great deal of time on the net everyday.

At least 90% if not more of my downloads are over 1mbps, that is until I hit the cap, but then I only download what I need and not just for the sake of trying to see how much I can DL.

1. We cannot get ADSL until next year sometime
2. We would rather go with the SNO ADSL than telkom anyways when they come out
3. We like the month to month option
4. Mobility allows skype to be used on weekends which is ideal (for people with family overseas
5. It is faster than ADSL and we don't worry about cap or price per 3gb as we won't use 3gb
6. It is cheaper than businessDSL at R477 (line retal) (DONT forget phone line rental and ISP charges)

(from what i gather homeDSl is not available to businesses)

Reason why we are not happy
1. get disconnected for long periods (up to 18hrs) frequently (almost daily)

But customer support has been very good of late and we are still giving WBS a chance to work it out.

just to clarrify, I never put this post in as a "ADSL is better than Iburst" topic, it was honestly comparing, as I was a sentech user, found an exit to the contract recently, and am now moving over to another connection medium, just looking at pros and cons from both sides, it seems there are a lot of happy customers too.
