Year End Functions

That time of year again. Luckily I don't have to go this year. Free food? I'll spend money and go to a restaurant thank you very much.

We got the choice this year, as we do each year, to either work or put in a day's leave. So this year I am happily sacrificing a day's leave. The `free food` and other `activities` bore me.

It is not a chance for networking or anything productive, so will rather do my own thing that day.

Haven't been in years. Unfortunately this year, as I am with a different company I have to go, 'cause it's during working hours :(

Last time I went to office was 4 months ago. Last time I went to year end function was 12 years ago, or maybe more.

Last year we had a limit of R250 , after hours and can't bring a +1. Oh and did I mention it was on the 23rd.

So no I won't be attending this year aswel. Not my cup of tea

I have not gone to one for many years now. According to our constitution I have freedom of association, and I chose not to associate with my colleagues in social circumstances. They're just that, colleagues, not friends. And an office function brings the fakeness of managers out, treating you like you're their friend after bullying you throughout the year.

Luckily, I have since gone on pension, so I am spared this office politics.

Seen this too.

Buy alcohol on his account to everyone's hearts content to butter you up
next year you get another crappy increase and costs kept down so he gets a nice bonus.

From his angle 10k booze on his credit card for nice bonus for keeping costs down is worth it to him

Business worlds version of a yellow tshirt and streetwise two

imagine working hard all year with the same people just to have a function at the end of the year with same people during non working hours to talk about the same things you have been talking about all year long 😐

There should be a law against being forced to socialise with your work colleagues.

Would rather not go, but, since it's during working hours that will be treated as unpaid leave :(
So this time I am pretty screwed. However I might just pull a disappearing act, or be sick on the day.
Ours is also during office hours 🙌

Not my favourite event to go to so will probably show face and then do an Irish Goodbye.

due to weirdness of my role being stuck between the main company, the sub division we work for and the fact that we also fall under the separate company the supplies IT services to the main company and the sub companies. last year I had 3 year end functions. and I enjoyed all 3 a lot. one was AWS deep racer event that my team won. the other was a massive party with lots of free booze and dancing. was quite a joll. the other was a big braai on the balcony again lots of booze and dancing. that was 3 different fridays. then on the Partner that is our direct boss's last day we had a braai at his house as well. that was 4 big fridays that got very fun and took a lot to recover from.

this year I dont think it will be 4 again, it will likely only be 3, but the sub company is moving to a different office building in the same business park acorss the parking lot from the main building, so this week Friday we have a big party to celebrate the move over. whole day even booked in the calander even

Having ours on the 24th of November. I'm in Ivory Coast on business for the week and only land in JHB at 4am on the 24th and then a 7am flight to be back in Cape Town at 9am. Functions starts at 10am. Will see how much sleep I get on the overnight flight and if I'm feeling up for it.

What is your occupation?

Gees what companies are you people working for lol? Everyone in ours looks forward to socializing, and many of us do we have COD teams accross employments levels (from consultants to the owner) we go for breakfasts on weekends sometimes... etc. The majority of the company are males, with a 70/30 split - but we all get on very well.

If something happens to me or i'm not feeling well at 3am i know i can phone one of them and they'll come over. And i do the same to any of them even though i own the company. That said... we do have our odd fights sometimes but its usually over rubbish and easily solved with a chat or a hug lol.

For our office function we settled on a spit at the office complex entertainment area. I supply alcohol as needed but anyone who wants to drink must use the company Uber to get to work and back that day. If you're in your own car sorry, 1 drink max for you.

then its generally just chatting, laughing etc. Last year I tried to get the group to move to Taboo or somewhere afterwards but most were tired and some have wives that apparently nag if they're out till 4am... But some don't. And we had a blast lol.

So long as it is during office hours, what's there to complain about? At the very least, it's a free lunch, and a few hours off work.

But an after hours or weekend function? Nope, thanks anyway.

Used to enjoy the schwanky ones they did were I could bring a plus +1, and it was at a nice venue with great catering. For the free meal and atmosphere I will happily go. Past few years its a no on the plus 1, and half OK food. At that point I only go if I feel like it on the day, generally not. Our team just got kicked out to a support area so I highly doubt any of my team will want to go to the token Braai or whatever the support department does. Every year I heard from the guys I engage with in the support area how lame it is so I will avoid. Also, 13 Dec. Wow.
