Whats the deal with these bee coloured number plate holders on new vehicles?
I notice that the number plates are riveted on.

When I took delivery of my new vehicle:D recently, my plates were stuck on directly with 2 way tape.
When i queried with the dealer he mumbled something about a future bylaw, also that sticking it on without the backing looks neater and also said that he would have had to drill holes into the front bumper to put the holder there.

Now is there gonna be some law? Do I have to now go back & do what needed to be done in the first place?

This government is looking to make MORE money out of us taxpayers and we never see the benefits of this!

Yep!

These a new type of bar-coded number plate coming out soon. Gauteng will be first province to get this.

Cops will be able to scan your no. plate without you even knowing about it from the comfort of their cars.

Keep your plates on with double sided tape, far nicer than a bloody awful black and yellow backing plate, that has only been created to generate more government money in the future.

Thats exactly why the new plate holders are needed. Because people "secure" their plates w/ double sided tape & they fall off giving a perfect excuse for all the people driving illegally without plates.

All new cars should come w/ the yellow things atm.

Slightly OT: The new plates have a thin squiggly line thing going across them (left->right). Anybody know what thats about?

Funny, if you do the job correctly in the first place your plates won't fall off. The first time our plates were glued on was when my dad used Bostick to glue on plates on our new 67 Jag, as he didn't want to drill holes in the boot...been using double sided tape, personally ever since then and have never lost a plate even on my rally cars.

But what has the backing plate/holder have to do with the NEW number plates that are coming out? Cant these new plates not be stuck on??

I agree with you, as far as I can see, the powers that be have simply come up with a more expensive backing plate in order to rip us off even more. A standard backing plate at Midas will cost you R15 if I remember correctly, whereas these yellow and black monsters are about R150!

For that reason alone I will stay with my double sided tape!
