Hi Guys, looked in the forum but all the treads where quite old. And thought might be useful to get some more recent info. I'm going to Zanzibar in few weeks and would like to know where can i get yellow fever vaccination in East side of JHB. Also would appreciate some advises regarding malaria protection. Would like to use sprays if possible. Would prefer not to use pills. Not sure if this is even possible. Also if you can recommend some good brands. Money are not so important. Would prefer something that is really effective with minimum to none affects on my body.
Thanks in advance

Any travel doctor.
You can google them.

Edit: didn't take malaria pills myself and know of many other that also did not. No problems.

Some people do take cheap odorless garlic pills from clicks.

Go to a travel doctor for a shot, only need one every 10 years.
You can get herbal tablets for malaria prevention, I've always use them and never had a problem.
Never use the chemical malaria tablets, they are extremely dangerous.

Also buy 2 mosquito bracelets per person, one for your arm and one for opposite leg (not the cheapies as they don't work - the good ones are about R50 each)

Prepare to sweat like a fountain wherever you go, Zanzibar is very humid!

Hi Vampire,

Thanks a lot. Any advice for which herbal tablets to look for. I don't care about the money much. I want good stuff. Where can i get them from? The same for the bracelets. Which brand would you suggest and where to get them from. Do you know any travel doctors in Edenvale/East JHB area by any chance?
Thanks again for your help

If you're worried about malaria get a malaria bracelet.
We used them a few times in areas with high risk of malaria.
No issues what so ever.

It's like a springy arm band that smells like citronella.

Also guys do you know any good sprays that i can use again mosquitoes? I still will prefer using spray, then pills if possible. Tnx.

Never take the chemical malaria prevention pills, all they do is mask the symptoms and test results. Use bands, peaceful sleep, mosquito nets etc. If you do start feeling sick anywhere from a week to a month after being in the area go to a doc immediately and inform them you've been in a malaria area. Docs here are a bit clueless when it comes to malaria but if you tell them immediately they should get the hint.

Hi Electric, I do worry about malaria. I'm from Europe and I definitely worry about :) Any good brand that you can suggest and where to get it from. Are the bracelets fine or i still need to take tablets/sprays as well. Thanks

There's one at builder wharehouse that is 100% effective in malaria areas.
It really works well.
Doesn't smell great but man it works.

It's in a yellow bottle, can't remember the name though.

We used the bracelet during the day all day.
waterproof as well so we kept them on in the water as well.
Applied spray at night for sleep.

I can't think of the brand of bracelet but it looked like a yellow coiled spring, we bought it from Cape union Mart.

Anopheles mosquitoes feed either at dawn/dusk or at night so wearing a bracelet during the day didn't prevent malaria. :)

Sprays and a mozzie net are effective - though I've yet to stay in a hotel that didn't have at least one hole in it letting in the little vampires. I'm always happy to take the pills - though I do have a preference to Malarone over Larium.

That wasn't the one I used, I even said I'm not sure ffs.
We used the bracelet during the day to avoid mosquitos.

I dont know how people can tell others not to take malaria tablets it so risky.

Personally I take malanil as the mefloquine ones make me feel a but crappy on the day I take it. Prevention is obviously the main aim so use repellants and sleep under a mozzie net etc.

And a few people I know have got malaria on a homeopathic tablet that was claimed to have never had any infections.

Because they don't work and are only prescribed by doctors in SA because that's what they're told to do. Doctors in zim(many many malaria areas) will specifically advise against it.

The pills mask test results so if you get malaria you test negative and therefore aren't treated, had a friend this happened to and he ended up with cerebral malaria because doctors refused to treat the malaria because he took the pills and tests were negative.

Use sprays, nets etc as they are just as effective as the pills and wont mess up tests results. If you do catch malaria the treatment is very effective and you'll be up and about relatively quickly.

I was there in Dec/Jan, all over the main island and in the southern end of Pemba. Not a single mosquito did I see. I didn't take malaria tablets - but then I am from Zim.

But the customs/immigration officers swarmed worse than mosquitos to see my yellow fever docs. Seriously, I had to show them everywhere I went.
