The dealer actually sent the car to Subaru for a service. I gave the mechanic working on the car a call to find out...

He said, nothing to worry about, it is Tectyl rust preventer spray as @airborne suggested.

Seen it on most. Notice it is always over the silver area on the engine where the two blocks meet on the boxer engine with QR codes that they use with production.

Volvo does something similar. You’ll even see it over the plastic bits (overspray I’m guessing).

I also sprayed my VW aluminium engine parts with Tectyl or silicone spray when I went on extended holidays at Swakopmund. It kept the aluminium parts corrosion free on those salty roads and salty environment.

Oil doesn’t leak upwards.

Someone just spilt when refilling and don’t do a very good job cleaning up.
