Yes folks, I've got my Mac

Let me rephrase that, it rips DVD's to AVI files in 45 min, the previous statement is a bit confusing.
 
neio : I'm pretty sure it rips to H.264 or mpeg-4. Or maybe I am thinking of Handbrake Lite

I think you might be - I'm using handbrake at the moment to rip to avi (xvid encoder)
 
Can the AVI's be played back on the iPod video?

Sounds like the avi's rip a whole lot quicker than to MP4.

Anybody notice increased memory hogging and slower rip times the longer handbrake stays open?

I always close Handbrake and reopen it once I need to do another DVD.
 
The Lenovo (my first notebook) is going to a colleague as it is not very practical for my needs.

Been look at a 2Ghz Mac Pro .... eina ... 20K ... but it looks really good :).

Maybe I should just close my eyes and buy it.

What have you got in there now? 512mb? And in what configuration. Check the System Profiler if you're not sure (Apple menu, About this Mac, More Info...

The reason I ask is you might have to ditch the ram you have in there now when you want to upgrade.
