Yet another camera thread: Good Buy, 40D?

Nice examples of aperture and DoF but was it intended for this thread?

If you're mind is set on the 40D I'd look for a body only and get better glass. (perhaps the Canon Zoom Wide Angle-Telephoto EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM would be a great place to start)

I have this combo. If you have the budget, you won't be sorry. One of the nice things about the 40D is you can set so many things without taking your eye off the viewfinder and without moving your hands. Shutter, ISO, aperture, metering and a few more things are all within thumb and forefinger reach. I'm not comparing to the 400D (because I don't know it well) - just stating what it's like on the 40D.

BUT: You said you want good glass. But the glass and buy a body with what's left. If it's an old-stock 350D you still won't be sorry.

The 24-105 f/4L is also about as good as it gets in that range. It's so sharp your eyes will hurt. It's f/4 right through. It focusses quickly and absolutely quietly. You can manual focus without switching the lens to MF. Seamless macro mode (i.e. no switch for it). I find it perfect for a walk-around lens. 24mm is not as wide as the kit lens, but it's still wider than 50mm on a traditional film camera. And if you one day decide to get a full frame body, it'll fit nicely.

There's negligible IQ difference between the 400D and the 40D.

I'll dare say there's no difference. Except maybe in the way it bakes jpegs.

You just don't get better value for money Canon lenses.

Ever looked at Pentax? ;)

And please don't recommend an f2.8 over an f4 just because it's faster. The price difference is not justified.

I agree that the price difference is extortionate, really, it cannot cost that much more to produce an aperture diaphragm that can open a few mm further. That said, if Canon announced a 24-105 f/2.8L USM today for £1500, I'd lay my money down...

The differences between the two do however justify the price tag IMHO.

Live view, more fps, and a semi sealed body...

The biggest difference for me, after the size and shape, is the viewfinder. Stick your eye in it and you'll see. It's bigger, clearer, brighter.

300mm at f/5.6 looks like this:

The cat's nose is not even in focus. Only the eyes.
The light was dim. That's why I used f/5.6

200mm at f/2.8
Click for 100% crop.

Only the right eye is in focus.

But with a wider shot you can get it all in focus at f/2.8
200mm at f/2.8

So you don't have much depth of field at big f-stops on telephotos.
At 300mm, I've found that I mostly use between f/8 to f/16.
Are these shots digital or film? Don't forget that DoF is influenced by the image sensor size. 35mm film size (full frame) will have far shallower DoF than an APS-C size at the same focal length.

I was just using the grey model for illustrative purposes. BTW - Would a US grey lens or non-grey lens make any difference at all here in SA?

I'm not sure. You'd need to check with B&H regarding the int warranty on each item. I've heard that the lens's enjoy international warranty, but not bodies.

Which 70-200 do you have? the Canon f4/l? I'm thinking a 2x extender might be in order for my next purchase.
I have the f2.8 IS
I have a 2X TC , and would not recommend going more than a 1.4X TC.

My kit:
EOS 350D + Kit 18-55 lens (wife's)
EOS 30D, EF-S 17-55 f2.8 IS USM,
EF 70-200 f2.8 L IS USM, EF 28 f1.8 USM,
Kenko 2X TC, 580EX

Next purchase will be the 10-22 towards the end of the year when I'll be working in the US.

I know the 2x means a big reduction in aperture and no auto focus on my 70-200 but I only want it for whale watching from the house and some lunar photography so I can probably live with it.

I can always get the 1.4x later too :)

A grip is always an option for the larger handed among us :)

How is this lens?

The 70-200 F2.8 IS is legendary.

I really don't understand the talk on here about the need to switch off IS - I leave IS on at all times, even when on a tripod as they are smart enough to know when it's needed.

This lens has given me loads of keepers when photographing my boys surfing and doing Moto-X.
It also makes a stellar portrait lens.

The 17-55 is the one that lives on my 30D - this lens is superb for natural light indoors etc. The wide aperture and electronic tripod is great.

I like the look of the EOS 30D, EF-S 17-55 f2.8 IS USM but for one thing EF-S and I really want a full frame next.

If only I'd had the money - even for the non-IS version . . blaady kids and their always wanting clothes . . . and food! :) I'll live with the f/4 . . for now. :)
It's not the size that counts, but the slowwwww hand.

How's that song go ........
Its the battery life that counts too :D The side controls are awesome . . . when I remember to use them :o

I'm still half asleep - I meant to ask how this one is:

I gave it a long hard look when I was shopping for my first one but ended up taking the 24-105L since the price difference is rather small.

I would find 24 a bit narrow for indoors.

The 17-55 is also amazing - it has the IQ of an "L" lens, but not the build quality.
It really reduces the need for a tripod.

The only negative I see is the dust (some never get it) and the price, but get past that and it's awesome.

Mine got dust in which I cleared myself and since then I use a UV filter which stops the dust getting past the front circular sticker.
The dust had no impact on IQ.
I take the UV off for shots I suspect may be influenced by it, but haven't had the dust again.

I've decided to stick with the crops for now - I may be tempted to pass the 30D onto the wife, and go for the 40D - I doubt if I'll she'll buy into that seeing as she really likes the 350D with the 28 1.8 attached.

You've got to wait for the kids to get out the house and buying their own luxuries like food and clothes.

Like I mentioned earlier - going from the 400D to the 40D makes no sense for me <had to stress that ;).

Next logical step up for me would therefore be full frame. I'll still be able to use the EF-S lenses I have on one of the two 400Ds I currently have (have to have a spare camera after all) but for new purchases I'd like to be able to use the lens on both types.

Ever looked at Pentax? ;)
Yeah, but we were talking about Canon lenses. Are the Pentax lenses good value for money? I like their cameras. They have built in IS in the body. That's kinda cool. Maybe my next digital will be a Pentax. Maybe the K200D, yes? Then I can use my Pentax lenses with it.

But then again, I already have a digital camera. Still works (got it in 2003):

Those are Canon 5D

How is this lens?

****ing awesome!!! :D

Look how sharp it is at 200mm f/2.8! (that's a 1 to 1 crop) That's really sharp!

May I also add, ****ing heavy! :D

I think mine are still on the default settings - it was only last night that I figured out how to actually disable the button :o

Do you mind sharing the settings you use?
