Howzit guys

Yes this is another thread about a pc build, i looked at the other threads but they didn't really answer my questions.

Im looking at upgrading just CPU, mobo

Not sure what my budget is at the moment but i've been looking for a semi high end rig.

I would just like to know which ones are better:

Amd socket AM3 Phenom2 x4, Quad-core 945 (3.0Ghz) - seems to be pretty lekker for R1800

Core i5-750 Core LGA1156 2.66GHz 8Mb Cache - also R1800

and which mobo for each. I dont really have another R2000 for a mobo so maybe something round R1500 would be better. I've checked Asus boards but they all quite pricey.

DDR 1333, 1066, 800 ? Which is best bang for buck.

I dont have price lists for most suppliers so im currently going on prophecy/pcint prices.

i would go for the AMD personaly, but thats just me! im sure some ppl are going to say get the i5,

what do you want to do with the pc? or is it multi purpose?
 
More towards gaming. Other than gaming it will just be the standard browsing/office stuff.

Ya, i was thinking the AMD aswell, after checking the charts on tomshardware that AMD comes performs very nicely. Its not far off the i7's and Q series

I have the AMD PhenomX4 940 - 3.0GHz (Black Ed) - great CPU , cant complain at all! super fast

mobo i have is Gigabyte GA-MA790X-DS4 - was around R1200 and also cant complain,. has everything i need

Graphics card is have is Saphire 4850 X2 and what a dream!

ram - OCZ Fatal1ty DDR2 1066 4 gigs

and 2 X 1.5 TB hdd

Also, is DDR2 1066 the best ram to go for or should i look to go faster/slower?
 
I'd recommend DDR2-800 as the difference between DDR2-800 and DDR2-1066 is minuscule at best, unless you can get DDR2-1066 for approximately the same price as DDR2-800.
 
get the i7920(todays most recommended CPU for the avg market)... so what you pay a bit more but in the long run it'll benefit you.
 
lol nokkie, R1k more for the cpu and R1k more for a mobo.. i don't have that kinda cash. plus i'm looking to upgrade GPU in the very near future.

They both around the R1100 mark. Leaning towards the ASUS one.

So you rate that Asus board would serve me well? I'll never run SLI/CF so im not fussed about that. Supports ram speeds from 1800 down to 800mhz so thats cool and ya, i don't really think anythings wrong with it.

The biostar does run the 790GX chipset though while asus is 785G. /runs off to google

all the boards are the same... they come from china...
