Hi

I suspected my Marconi POTS router to be on the blink a while a go, kept on dropping my ADSL connection…,

Telkom techies did find that a card popped in the exchange (Fourways/Magaliessig area) and replaced it, but the ADSL line kept on dropping intermittently…, whilst my line tested clean…

Rushed out to by a Billion ADSl Modem…connected it, just to find the same…

I’ve isolated to problem to the POTS Filter…, the ADSL line drops as soon as I connect the filter to the phone line …, and I get a lot of static noise on the phone even with the filter attached…

Any suggestions/help on further testing procedure…

Is the POTS Filter the only one on the market? Is there something better, and where can I buy it?

Thanks

Max

Replace the POTS filter. I think the Netgear ADSL modems comes bundled with a filter.

thanks franna,

so i take it that there is no other filter brand on the market

ciao

You can buy filters from jump.co.za - I bought one there.

I think it MAY be a Billion - can't exactly remember.

POTS filters can easily go faulty

A couple of weeks back I noticed that my voice line seemed to be softer than usual - thought it was just old age!
Then I found that my outgoing fax would not connect properly, although everything seemed to be fine. Fax goes through the POTS filter.

Replaced the POTS filter and all problems disappeared.

The one that went faulty was from jump.co.za.
Possible that they are just sensitive to surges on the line... It is after all summer on the highveld.

Don't think you can use the netgear one in SA, unless you do some modifications to it.

Hi Nickste

I came to the same conclusion - how do you mod the filter?

Well, when the techie came over to install adsl, he didn't bring enough microfilters. So I showed him the netgear one. He tested it, but it didn't work. He said it is something to do with SA using the inner two connectors of the phone jack, and, wherever netgear comes from, using the outer two connectors. So if you could switch that around, you could probably use the filter. Too much effort in my opinion :(

Cheers, Nick

The Netgear one does work. You just need to switch the cable ends around. Takes you one minute to see if it works or not.

the netgear one works on my side. jus in the beginning I was having a problem, and then after playing around wit the cables that came with it worked! good luck!
