So recently my car(2008 Yaris Sedan) was written off and now I'm having to search for a replacement car.
I'd prefer a 2nd hand car as I'll probably get more bang for buck as my budget is +/- R200K with some wiggle room and I'm looking for a good family car or at least something bigger or on par with my old Yaris.

Anyone have some good recommendations?

Basic requirements:
  • Must be big enough for family of 5, so no matchbox/dinky toy cars
  • Preferable a model from the last 5 years, 10 max.
  • Easy to maintain or at least not gonna cost an arm and a leg every time I need to service it.

Corolla, Corolla quest..
I do like Toyota and I have been looking at few options, but I think maybe I'm also looking for something that has a bit more features than just the standard entry level Corolla Quest.

If you hunt, there are Corollas available for your budget, that have plenty more features..

Was going to suggest this...

The service costs are actually not scary at all..

Also understand that with most modern cars, the servicing costs will be largely on a par. It depends on when things go horribly wrong, and other day to day costs like tyres.

I've seen that in other threads, this one gets recommended a lot.
But which year or engine model... I have no idea about anything BMW, other than indicators being an optional extra.

My wife found a 2016 A3 Sportsback that looks reasonable and she like it, but not entirely sure whether an Audi is worth it.
Anyone have any thoughts about whether to bother with a 2nd hand Audi

The problem with looking at a 320D, in the R200k price range, is that people who own them, tend to hold onto them until the milage is rather high or the car is old. There aren't many of them, that I would personally trust not to break, for R200k or less.

I have heard just not the 1.8T, other variants are fine

Generally the F30 range...

At R200k you're probably in the 2014/2015 year range, but the mileage will be 120000 - 160000 probably (I'm guessing). The engine is pretty much either the N47 or B47 depending on what year you can get, they're both great motors that will go for donkeys year if looked after.
One minor thing to be aware of though, and its a standard BMW thing of them being behind the curve, if you want something like Bluetooth audio streaming, it needs to be a 2015MY or above, otherwise you have to get aftermarket stuff to achieve it.

If they have decent service records, the motor will be largely bullet proof... Mine is on 150000kms now and purring like a kitten, and I bought it at 125000kms.

There are a few interior issues to be mindful of, and of course the cost of tyres on a BMTroubleU is always something to be aware of.

Pricing on parts can get quite pricey. There was a discussion somewhere on MyBB for the replacement of a gearbox on an Audi A5, I think. Can't find it now

Audis are boooooooring, might as well get a corolla, at least thats boring but it has reliability going for it. Audi has nothing.

F30 for the win. Cheaper, not too old, easy to maintain, lets not mention the torque.

Having been in the back and the front of one of these, space is not where this car shines..

Agreed, Audi's can be a bit cramped somehow... its weird how they seem to waste space in what is not a small car.

It is the strangest thing.. every time I see one on the road, I get reminded of how uncomfortable I was in it, yet it looks so big from the outside..
