The better question is whether your tap water tastes better before or after lunch.

What's the hardware. What's held you back so far?

Do you have anything useful to contribute?

1 x 2013 mbp
1 x 2014 mbp

what's held me back - the potential 3rd party software incompatibility.

bwana, while i have your attention, what would you suggest be used as a photo library manager (about 30GB on an ext drive).
been using iphoto, but it seems to be getting cumbersome.
so essentially, the library management is the big thing - and simple editing (very simple basic editing)

Really?

That's like asking whether one should upgrade from IOS 7 to 8.

Obvious answer is obvious, unless you want to run archaic software.

Not one of the applications on my iMac or MBP fails to run on Yosemite besides Final Cut Pro... but who uses FCP these days anyway? ;)

Just upgrade it, there are no major issues.

In fact staying "behind" is what puts you at a disadvantage.

Yeah, I've not had one app that I use fail in any way. There is NO reason to not upgrade.

the only problem I found was with non-Apple standard issue hardware. But shame on me for buying anything without a thunderbolt right :erm:

I always clone the drive before an update just in case there is some incompatibility.

I use Aperture but they're abandoning it with the release of their Photos app due out soon which will also be replacing iPhoto.

Geez, so much snark.

grantza, check the applications you need to use. There are some that don't work on Yosamite (yet). For example, some of the audio APIs changed (i don't really know or understand the details) and as a result Audacity does not work. Or rather, it works, but some functionality is missing. Either way, it does not yet suppport Yosamite.

My experience:

1. 2011 MBP. Yosemite runs fine. No problems at all on 8GB memory. A bit slow with the start-up.
2. 2013 MBP. Was harassed by the bad Wifi reception and bluetooth disconnection. Interesting to note that it only start 2 weeks after Yosemite upgrade. Either the mouse becomes erratic randomly (but I suspect it is when the Wifi is quite busy) or the Wifi becomes slow. Sorted out the Wifi, but the bluetooth is still a problem. Everything points to hand-off and the Bluetooth 4.0 chip. But no-one can say exactly.
