It would be sexist to call a woman a bastard.... After all we now have spokesperson and chairperson instead of spokesman and chairman.

Calling someone a bitch is not sexist. It's sexist to use a male term for them though.
 
It's nice that Koos Bekker's News24 is pushing this sort of BS. Inflaming racial tensions and what-not. Sensationalising individual cases and making everybody know about them, never mind the generalisations. If SA burns in a racial war, God forbid, how will Naspers make their money?

Oh I forgot they have Gadu-Gadu and Mail.ru.
 
So many people here seem to have missed out what the guy in question was originally confronted about by the woman ... mocking a lecturer's pronunciation (you know how that goes). That was strike 1. When she pointed out this was a ****ty thing to do, he then brought race into it with her too. Strike 2. Do we really need three strikes each time?

I don't buy the premise of that news story though - white kids aren't all universally privileged (that's another stereotype we need to tackle), and white kids who're racist do it knowing full-well what they're doing (although they might not quite appreciate the long-term repercussions in terms of liability).

Mocking somebody because of their accent is wrong, period.
Bringing somebody's race into a debate is wrong, period.

Never mind exactly what the woman did, if the guy did both of the above things he deserved an entire news story about him because clearly there are still too many white South Africans who've got no clue the extent of the sort of casual racism which is inspiring the black racism we're seeing as well (and yes, that exists too and is equally wrong).

Really, let's just move along people - it's only a pity that it had to be a black woman tackling the white guy about his comments, and not another white person correcting him for his stupid behaviour.

This is nonsense. Some punk insults someone else. Why does that deserve a news story. How many people get raped, beaten and murderd daily. These people live with huge psychological scars, if they even survive at all. This does not deserve anything. This is just sensationalism, tabloid style and should have been dealt quietly. In fact it should not have been dealt at all. Two adults should have the right to insult each other. If the student was disrupting a lecturer he could have been told to shut up or leave the class. He could also have been graded down in attendance or some such. To bring politics into this is just nonsense.
 
Space_Chief, in South Africa race IS politics, hadn't you noticed? It's therefore hardly 'ridiculous'. The only thing that IS ridiculous is that some white racists still feel that they can spew their racism publicly, and that they're entitled to 'get away with it'. Sorry, but no. Not in a country with South Africa's past. Not when there are a million other 'go-to' issues that young kids at University could choose to get angry about and mock ... why pick race, not once, but twice?

Until a certain class of white South African learns, they're gonna have to feel. Unfortunately for the rest of white South Africans, they're making our lives pretty difficult because their 'freedom of speech' is justifying BEE in the eyes of many others ("You see, those white people STILL treat us like they do in the old days.")

Are you defending this guy because you think white people should be allowed to be racist; because YOU are racist yourself; because you are an ardent supporter of complete and utter freedom of speech (up to and including racism); or because you think that race issues should rather be swept under a carpet than dealt with openly?

From a news perspective, the racial violence still being experienced in South African Universities (from all sides) is very telling ... it turns out the previous generation of parents have failed in raising children after 1994 to become something a little wiser than they were.

Also bear in mind that these people are supposedly the 'intelligent' ones in South Africa, and that's where it becomes really scary.

Everywhere I look nowadays it's whites, blacks, indians etc. I wonder when people will grow up and see beyond skin colour, we are all human after all (well, maybe except for pitbull, who wants to tap everything!)

Plus I'm willing to bet dollars to donuts that words were said on both sides.

This has nothing to do with patience, and everything to do with fear and anger on all sides.

Just imagine if that white guy DID have his handgun on him, and opened fire. This is a great example of a case where a gun would only escalate matters rapidly, which is why people shouldn't carry them in public (a whole different argument that's going to piss off another whole class of entitled person).

I'd get out of there, to safety. Instead the guy tried to act the hero (actually he just tried to vent his anger - I mean seriously), and what do you know, he and his girlfriend had to pay the price for his stupidity.

All I'm seeing here is stupid white people getting tackled for being stupid, and other white people trying to defend the white people. Why?

I agree,hot headed, but in the end it still comes down to people in SA being as racist as ever, the ANC aren't helping matters.

Those long eye lashes and a gash being held open by her boyfriend? :confused: She's 28 years old, hardly a girl. Cannot confirm how innocent she was seeing as the journalist only took information from them and none of the other witnesses?

Look, the 'mob' may well be unhappy with white people coming in and throwing their weight around (for a number of complex historical and sociological reason), and as much as some white people may feel that the reaction of the crowd didn't match the initial aggravation (whatever that was and whatever was said), it's cause and effect.

If you're a white person, you may want to not respond with insults. If you jump to insults, you may then want to stop using them when other people use them back. If you ignore point one AND two, you may sure as hell not want to throw the first fist. Oooooh, right ... didn't work here, and they got a lesson. Only they're going to misinterpret what that lesson is teaching them, because they had the wrong initial conceptions. How do we know that? Because of the first three points.

If you kick a dog that barks at you, don't cry when you get bitten.
