Your ADSL speeds slow?

Gaming isn't entirely dependent on speed. Its latency that's the killer.

I'm open to opinion, but this whole article sounds like an attempt to get people to take faster lines (and to pay more for a faster uncapped package).

I think it is a valiant effort to try get non technical people to understand how ADSL works - not just just say "its slow, my ISP is kak". What I wish is that we could get more info from the ADSL exchange to ISP POP - i.e. exchange contention and utilisation, routing paths and utilisation on those too. Graphs plotting throughput against time of day and per user (no account details of course) bandwidth graphs would be great.

Wishful thinking unfortunately:( Just knowing how choked up the exchanges and backhaul are would make a huge difference in understanding your user experience and who to blame instead of running in circles.

Yeah you get allot of idiots out there, they'll be complaining their browsing speed so slow mean while they downloading at the full line speed.

Like how the BIS apparently got faster when megaupload was shut down.

Douglasdale is surely suffering from massive contention issues.

My 1 Mbps line has never gone above 750 kbps and most of the time howevers around 400 kbps. It regularly just stalls out with periods of no net availability at all during peak times like 5 - 9 pm and weekends.

Telkoms general response is just to shrug their shoulders and tell me "hey its a busy exchange", which is hardly even BEST EFFORT if you ask me . And they wonder why they are about to get hit by a huge fine?

I called them last week cause only my international was 0.3Mb/s when my local was 4Mb/s. My pings were fine etc etc. They still blamed my line cause that is all they can do. They think that they are perfect and nothing can go wrong with them. They think if internet works it works either 100% or 0%. unfortunately it doesn't work like that. i should know it as i worked with WAN links etc etc.

They are to lazy to fix issues. if you are getting well below your current account speeds chances a faster line/account will give you faster speeds is 0%

man, i hope you just mistyped cause if you are getting that speed from a 1 Mbps line then i'm getting royally shafted :S

edit* had a brain fart, i was think kilobyte per second and you were meaning kilobit per second , my bad

Not sure if im the only one, but my telkom account is pretty crappy lately, sometimes it runs fine 5 minutes later nothing wants to work ,and my ping on MMO's is unstable too. I just bought a 3g platinum unshaped account from openweb that uses IS i think. and its running fantastic, so not sure if telkom has decided to shape every protocol known to the interwebz or what.

Thought it might be my router but if one account works great and the other sucks it cant be my end.

Oh im in lotus river, with a 6mbps line. I also have the problem that running speed tests with telkom account the local speed is close to line max but on international its below below 1mbps and rarely even reaches 2mbps

This is the issue, you will always be asked to run local tests and they'll nearly always be near to max speed. Fact is, we still have CRAPPY international bandwidth. Today my gmail is took 2 minute to login and then I actually had to use the low bandwidth version on a 4mb line. As of late most Youtube videos just buffer so poorly I give up in frustration. ~ 10 years on ADSL & still revisiting this site for the odd rant. And peculiarly I've had my BitTorrent connection go really slow until 12am and then open up to utilising near to full speeds. Even with a random port, encryption on (can't trust your ISP) - maybe they just flipping throttle EVERYTHING. And it's far too easy to reference / blame the user's ignorance and / or all of the various technical factors when I just reckon contention ratios suck as they always have. I'm on a capped 50GB account by the way - if uncapped I'd EXPECT this and is why I avoided that route. Anyway, back to bosh my head on my desk in frustration due to sloooow daily ADSL line speeds.

The problem is obviously Telkom and their lack of anything resembling upgrades at the exchanges.

My line used to be stable but I had a cable break and since restored I've been experiencing constant sub 1Mbps speeds & downloads failing etc. despite my line conditions being allright for at least 2Mbps. For the last three weeks I complained at Telkom, logged faults etc. with no response from them until last night I had enough and phoned helpdesk again threatening legal action as I'm not even getting the minimum advertised linespeed for 4Mbps. In fact my downloads are running at anything between 4 & 13Kbps before failing most of the time, on various capped ISP accounts.

Lo & behold I was told there's a problem on my exchange and they're working on it.

Yeah, riiiiight! Personally I think Telkom is tanking and you're just lucky if throughput issues haven't reached you yet.

Our ADSL speeds at the office have been sucky since November when the line just started losing synch all day long.

We now have a long strong of Telkom Fault reference numbers and no solution in sight.

When you phone them, they just tell you that they have a huge list of faults to see to before they can get to you.
