Hi folks

Over the next few weeks we will address various issues regarding MyADSL/MyBroadband’s future. The aim of these discussions will be to deliver a better service to our members and to be more effective and professional in our campaigns and dealings to ensure an improved broadband landscape in South Africa. As usual the feedback from you guys will govern the site’s ‘direction’.

The first issue:

Do you guys think we should keep the name MyADSL, change it to MyBroadband or use it interchangeable (like now I guess)? Please give your views/arguments regarding this issue.

Regards,

RPM

I definitely think we should change it to MyBroadband, since the site basically caters for all forms of home internet access. I have always referred to the site as MyADSL, but I think that Mybroadband is more applicable going forward.

It would make sense to be known as mybroadband because we are no longer just associated with adsl. But as adlo stated above, we are already well known as myadsl, so I don't think that changing it now would be wise. Does it really matter what the name is? People will get to know that myadsl.co.za IS the broadband authority.

To truly adress the whole broadband era : MyBroadband
To keep continuity with everything this site stood for since inception : MyADSL

I would think that due to the fight vs Telkom, MyADSL has almost become a brandname and that's a difficult thing to change. Maybe future endeavours (non-Telkom?) need to adopt MyBroadband.

mybroadband dude!!! it`ll make for a larger consumer and user base, and let the ibust and sentech people feel more included

This should be a business decision:- Taking a long term view.
"Broadband" will no doubt still be in use long after "ADSL"
is simply another outdated technology :)

Are we not also forgetting the dial-up peeps?

Would our fight not also have positive spin-offs for them?

Should I dare...

MyInternet.co.za

MyADSL is so well known it would be foolish to lose that momentum but we could refer to MyBroadband encompassing MyADSL....
as in MyADSL campaigners, part of the wider MyBroadband online community...

mybroadband or myadsl, as long as all contribute the way it has been been, make things change in our world, for a better life for all....

Definitely stick with myadsl. Think of it as a brandname rather than a pointer to a specific technology. Heck, we can even come up with our own definition of what the adsl stands for (the subject of a future competition perhaps?), but it would definitely be bad to change from myadsl because its become the identity of the forum and to change it would mean to lose a lot of momentum and recognition from our labours. In any case myadsl just sounds cooler than mybroadband :)

I know alot of the arguments are that the site is now bigger than just adsl and theres more technologies being used now, etc, but I still think it would be a terrible mistake to abandon the myadsl name since its achieved alot of recognition amongst the various providers (Telkom, iburst, etc) and the industry in general and changing it would probably lead to confusion.

In my opinion the main website should be www.myadsl.co.za. The www.mybroadband.co.za domain should redirect to the myadsl site (like it currently is just reversed) and only 1 domain should be used at all times so as not to dilute page rank and search engine rankings with multiple domains (unfortunately this has probably already happened a bit from changing domains in the recent past).

A name change is definately needed, but its just a question of when. Soon after the ICASA ADSL findings are released feels like a good time as we will know where we stand and where to move from, from there.

I'd say tell the media what the new name will be.

Best solutions are always so simple, aren't they ?

Media Release

MyAdsl today announced that they will be known as MyBroadband from this moment forward.

bloody good isea for a country wide press release...we can introduce the new name, publicise our successes, blow our horn a bit and see what happens
Follow it up immediately with the ICASA outcome in another press release and then make weekly press releases in the name of MyBroadband thereafter. i am willing to be active in the press/media relations gang of bodies RPM.

I totally disagree fergus, it's very clear what adsl stands for - asymmetric digital subscriber line
Yes, I know what ADSL stands for :). My point is that ours doesn't have to stand for that, or even stand for anything at all.

There are times when a company or technology starts off with a certain acronym and then outgrows the acronym somewhere down the line. Rather than change it to something new to encompass the growth (and possibly cause confusion and lose recognition) the acronym becomes more of a general name without a specific meaning. An example of this would be SQL which originally stood for Structured Query Language but now consists of several subsets (DDL, DML, etc) and the acronym doesn't really apply anymore. So now it justs a name and not an acronym.

I maintain it would be better for myadsl to stick with the original name for practical reasons (everybody knows it) than change it and lose the impact of what myadsl has come to stand for. Hey if it was a really sucky name like pietpompieskewlinternetforum.co.za then I would agree with you but as the saying goes, if it ain't broke - don't fix it. At the end of the day what the most forumites want is what the forum will go with. Thats just my opinion.
