I need a laptop, and I need it before the end of the month. I'd probably choose something because it looks pretty :p, so I'm turning to you for help. I need to line up a few options. I need to know the pros and cons of what you've chosen (and links so I can see what you're talking about). I need to know where I should get it from. I really do need to get it before the end of the month.

What am I looking for?
A laptop.
In the region of R10 000.
It will be used for work. Documents, email and Internet.
I'm not much of a game player, before you ask. I don't think Tetris needs sophisticated hardware/software :p
wifi, bluetooth, etc etc -enabled.
Probably a long warranty period.
CD/DVD writer.

What would I like in a laptop?
A clear, decent-sized screen. I tend to never print and read everything off the screen. There's a lot of reading in my job.
Longer-lasting battery.
A keyboard that's nice to type on (if that makes sense).
Fast (or whatever is inside to make it fast; my current work laptop makes me scream in frustration)
Not too big or heavy, as I'll have to carry it around.
Preferably black and nice-looking ;)

Ask me any questions that'll help you to help me, and I'll answer them and update here too :)

I used to have an HP Pavilion, similar to this one.
# Intel Core 2 Duo P8600 processor 2.4GHz
# 2048MB RAM
# 250GB HDD
# LightScribe super multi DVD writer
# Integrated 802/11a/g/n WLAN
# Memory card reader and webcam
# nVidia GeForce9200m graphics with 256MB dedicated video RAM
# 14.1 WXGA FlushGlass display
# Windows Vista Home Premium
# 1 Year warranty

R10 995 at Incredible Connection - pretty sure you would be able to find it cheaper elsewhere.

Any chance your generous new boss would spring for a Mac?

I recently bought an HP Pavillion DV6-1125ei from Incredible for R9,995.00 which I am really happy with:

# AMD Turion X2 64bit processor 2.2GHz
# 4096MB DDR3 RAM
# 320GB HDD
# LightScribe super multi DVD writer
# Integrated 802/11a/g/n WLAN
# Memory card reader and webcam
# ATI Radeon HD 4530 512MB Graphics Card
# 15.6" Diagonal High Definition HP Brightview Display with HDMI
# Windows Vista Home Premium
# 1 Year warranty

It is black with designs on the casing as well and the HP sign lights up like the macs which makes it stand out as well. The battery is great and they keyboard is full (i.e. it has the number pad on the right as well). It also has a touchpad for all entertainment functions which is pretty nifty.

Yes, I'm quite liking the one that DJ posted too (satisfies the "ooh, pretty!" instinct and all the requirements).

We'd be using the same laptop then Ava, you realise that?

The only thing it lacks is built in bluetooth, but you can buy a USB dongle for under R100 which solves that little problem. It's a really high spec machine and I use it for music production now as well - it operates better than my desktop setup (apart from my mac). And yes, it looks really good as well - I never thought I'd see the day, but it does turn heads in presentations and becomes a topic of conversation until we all realise that we're perving over geek-toys...:o

EDIT: oh and the mousepad/touchpad thing is mirror-finished, so you can do your hair and make-up while posting on mybb. I do it all the time...

@dotty: You know you want to be just like me ;)

@stix: I can usually figure out anything on a computer pretty quickly, as long as it doesn't relate to hardware :). Thanks. Will check that out too.

There is a lot out there for 10k, given your requirements. Pop into an IC and have a look at what they have on display. DON'T ask for assistance, cos you won't get any that is good. But it will give you an idea.

For 10k, you could almost choose whichever one you like the look of most. For that price, the specs should be solid.

Just how long do you want this battery to last, though?
