Your Raspberry Pi Projects

Thanks for the input Mr Punny (aka GreGorGy) and K3NS31, much appreciated; checking out RSnapshot tonight.

On another note:
My USB power hub seems to have taken a knock after a recent power outage (thanks Eskom/municipality!); output on 2 of the ports are less than what they were (~1.3A instead of 2.5), so looking to replace the hub. Any suggestions or recommendations on brand? I've got the 3 aforementioned devices running 24/7.

I use a 7-port Manhattan that has been running for yonks. It was one of the cheapest that I could find :)

The one with the individual switches for each port? I have one gathering dust. Never thought it would power a Pi!

Bumpity

Got my RBP 3 today and started playing around with it. Getting a static address assigned to the eth0 is a pain! But It is currently linked to my router via ethernet, powered through the USB port off the back of it.

I have Raspbian on it at the moment, just seeing what it is capable of. I would like to turn it into a semi-firewall/traffic shaper/proxy when I have the basics figured out

Seems that way. I was getting the yellow power sign on my old cell charger but that seems to have disappeared when feeding off the router USB port, but I'll keep an eye on it.

@Drake2007, I am using a Huawei B315 that doesn't allow me to reserve addresses but I think I've managed to get it to work. Tinker tinker tinker...
 
I seem to have gotten the static IP sorted (thanks rrh); the issue was that the router wasn't liking my static address which was outside of my DHCP pool for some odd reason (it shouldn't be a problem as the address wasn't assigned to anything, but it just wasn't working) so I widened my pool and all was well. I also quickly set up a noIP hostname and got my VNC into my Pi working this morning before work, but I will hammer down on my security tonight when I am home to make sure I don't leave too many vulnerabilities.

With regards to the power supply, I haven't had any snags as of yet but I will probably disable the HDMI and USB ports in any case due to me not using them. I am trying to keep the current draw as little as possible. From reading online it seems the RBP will draw 780mA on bootup and since I am not going to be doing anything hardcore with it I should be fine in theory, but I am also trying to find out the max amperage supported by my router before I damage something. The B315 handles 2.5" external HDD's just fine, but I don't want to push my luck just yet...

The router will almost certainly have a hardware current limit on the USB port so you can't damage it by trying to draw more than it can supply. You can lose data integrity on your SD card from brown-outs on Pis connected to low current supplies though.
 
Does anyone know where to get a nice NAS case for the original Model B?

I have an awesome Couch Potato / SickBeard / MiniDLNA setu[ with a 1TB 3" hard drive connected to my Pi, but managing the mess of wires (power for HDD housing, power for Pi, ethernet, USB from HDD to Pi) is becoming too much for me. Hoping for a nice box that I just put the HDD and Pi into and all is good?
 
There aren't many custom cases for the Pi's around, so unless you know someone with a 3D printer (as there are plenty of templates you can use to make your own),you could go to your nearest toy store and pick up some Lego :D
