Your Raspberry Pi Projects

Menu response from pi 1 to 2 was chalk and cheese. I've been using a pi to with openelec for a while now without issue. Kodi is very responsive.

Good to know :) At least I'm not wasting money.

Have you tried Libreelec? (same code base)

Yes, Libreelec very nice. Snappy and quick. Use it with Exodus and Emby for local network shares. (Emby plugin for Kodi works with all the addons and skins, unlike the Plex plugin).

What exactly those plugins do, seems everything linking to kodi is blocked at work. Looks like media library management? I haven't had an issue with Kodi's internal library.

I recently upgraded from openelec to libreelec.

BTW if you want to use a traditional IR this is working well for me http://www.msldigital.com/collections/all-products/products/remotepi-board-plus-2015

Thats usefull, had/have a FLIRc which is useless, very buggy. Currently using a VERY old and reliable MCE remote :D

Is it faster? And how an upgrade?

Development on openelec isn't really happening, so its at least a major version behind.

I used a FLIRC for 2+ years with a Harmony remote, it was the best thing for my media centre I ever bought before getting a smart TV.

Mine was a nightmare, constant double pressing of buttons, etc... might of been an issue between FLIRC and XBMC at the time, but there was quite a bit of reporting on it, so I gave up and bought a generic mce remote control.

Think I saw it the other day, if I come across it again all add it to the classifieds as "give-away"

It's mostly for networked media library. So Emby specifically, syncs your local media library on each Kodi device with a main library on your server. Well, the metadata anyway. The actual media stays on the server-side. Great for multiple device access and keeping watched info across devices etc.

Ah..tx - I've been using mysql for years with a central nas device holding the content.

This is like that, but easier to setup and less finicky once it's running. (You literally just install the emby server and do some config on the server side where your media is hosted, then install the plugin on your Kodi devices and it'll look for a server and keep itself synced.)
Only downside at the moment is the scraping / tagging isn't as good as Kodi. It's a bit more fussy.

Interesting, I might look into it if mysql becomes too much of a hassle. At the moment its convienent because it runs on the nas device, so stored with the content, and away from the kodi devices.

This has been working well for me.

Yip - only issue I've had is sometimes when updating major versions it resets the watched status (granted, I'm usually too lazy to do the recommended back up the library).

I run Emby on my little Linux server which I use as my Media server - currently running it natively but moving to the Docker version. J And since it has a Docker version, it can run on NAS boxes that support Docker, like some of the Synology devices.

It's essentially the same functionality as the SQL setup, just easier because when you add a new Kodi device to your network (like a new phone, media player etc.), you don't need to do any config on that device, just install the Emby addon.
Also, if you have a fast enough server, it'll do transcoding for your phone etc.
Oh, and I like that it has it's own web interface, so when I wanna play media on my phone I don't have to have Kodi installed, but it still syncs my watched status and where I stopped in that episode to my main library.

What's the difference between Emby and Plex, why use one rather than the other. Emby looks like an almost exact copy of Plex Media Server.

Not sure if this info has changed since Plex anounced an official addon, but the issue used to be that Plex had it's own database, which it would then shoehorn into Kodi, whereas Emby uses a Kodi Database, which it just syncs across your devices (Technically, everything except the actual media). So no compatibility issues, whereas Plex wouldn't work with all Skins and some addons etc.
Also many Plex features are pay only. Some Emby features are pay only, but nothing important / useful.
