My laptop is doing streaming duty today, so running my new Pi4 8GB as a desktop. All my work can be done online and via cli today so will see how it goes. Have a 10" touch screen to add sometime, try to get it running as a portable alternative.

Keen to hear how it goes.

I'm actually keen on doing something like this if I had one of the newer Ipads:

Interested to hear your experience.

I have been using my Pi as my browsing, SSH and file transfer device for a few months now. If I want to do anything heavier then I wake on lan my main machine and remote into it.
I have installed the Cinnamon desktop which might be a bit heavy but the only place it feels sluggish is on youtube when it is loading a video.
But that might be my Rain connection.
Other than that it is perfectly usable and is a nice neat minimalist solution.

Was fine for the little bits I had to do, didn't get into too much, some of the web stuff didn't want to work on Chromium so i just used my phone. For general browsing and SSH was perfectly adequate. Want to try some of the Ubuntu based desktops, will play around with that next. Then on to getting the touch screen to work.

I would like my PI to still be available during load shedding , so i connected it to my Ratel 860p.
how can i make sure that the PI is getting enough power though?
when i used an OS called dietPI it was actually warning me if it didn't....but i am currently using manjaro.

I want to get a PI4 setup with windows for media centre (just need to stream video via wifi)
Netflix,youtube and Plex.

I do have 802.11ac 1900AC. It should be good enough for 1080p and 4K

Apparently there is some issues on Pi4 8GB or 4GB... i think only 3gb maximum can be used.
Not sure if the video codecs / video speeds has been resolved yet
Can one use all the USB ports now in Windows 10 on PI ?
Apparently the Wifi is a problem too (so i hope the network cable works)

Sounds like you just need Kodi or Plex (or both). No need to mess around with Windows.
Run something like LibreElec with everything preconfigured to make your life even easier.
Haven't tested the Pi 4 yet but I've done the above (or variations thereof) on a few Pi 3's and it just works.

I use multiple platforms, so that is why i was figuring Windows.

As i do run Plex home server, need for plex is a must.
I also have Netflix account (so i would like to stream that via my media player - via PI4)
Youtube
Twitch

I need all 4 those to run seamless, all in one.

and i was figuring, i could play some odd games on there too, maybe some Mame roms or Retro games.

Well I haven't tried Netflix or Twitch myself. I hear the Kodi Netflix addin works well though. I'd assume Twitch has one too. Obviously Plex works fine.
And you can set it up to open Retropie / Emulation stuff via Kodi.
I'd try one of those all-in-one SD card images like Libre Elec / OLPC etc. Will be quicker than going through a Windows install. Even with add-ins. (probably a 1GB download; write image to SD card; boot on Pi and then tweak a bit and add add-ins for YT, Netflix etc.)
Then if you're not happy you can always reformat and install Windows.

I don't have the Pi4 yet. i'm thinking about it hard though. As i want a solutions that is workable.

I heard so many issues on Pi4 . Apparently only upto 3gb ram usable. Then the sound don't work, have to get a USB soundcard. and wifi don't work in windows. So i'm thinking of waiting till they sort it out. alternative i must just go buy a Mini PC or NUC. Those are slightly more.. I 've seen some going for R4000. So double the price of the PI4.

I also heard Pi4 has video or codec issues in Windows. So i'm really inbetween a rock and a hard place now.

I can buy the PI. but then have to go run Linux and i'm not too keen on Linux. I've dabbled before.. but i'm not a fan. Prefer Win7/10

I might have missed something here but... why?
there too many issues on pi4 sofar. No solution yet for the 3gb Memory limit (so if i buy the Pi4 8GB version. only 3gb is seen)

No Sound, no Wifi, No Lan in windows. Unless i go buy accessories. USB Soundcard, USB Wifi Card, or USB to LAN port.

I believe in Linux or Raspbian it does detect 8gb ram, but i can't run my Windows Apps.

you want to watch Netflix and Youtube - you won't care if it sees 3GB or 8GB (never heard of this bug BTW. May be a Windows thing).
I run all sorts of stuff on my Pi 3 - which is only 2GB. Retropie, Kodi, YT etc.
And you don't need to mess with Linux. With Libre Elec; OLPC etc. you do everything from within the Kodi interface or the custom OS menu (These 2 both boot into Kodi then have an extra menu for u to do OS level configs on the rare occasion that you need to - usually just enter wifi settings.
Haven't heard anybody complain about sound or wifi either, but again, sounds like a Windows issue. Win10 on Pi4 is pretty recent so I'd expect some bugs.

Anyway, why don't you just search Youtube for people who have the stuff you want to use and you can see exactly how it looks and if there are bugs. It's 2020, you don't need to try it yourself. That's what YouTubers get paid for.

Have a look here for a quick intro :

Below the video ( when viewed on YouTube ) is a list of additional links for things like the actual mirror build, the software setup, calendar setup etc.

Obviously you make it your own. I made my mirror a lot thinner ( 22mm ) so it looks like a regular mirror, not a box mirror. I put conduits into the wall for the cables and the "bulky" Pi sits 5m away in a easily accessible cupboard

I didn't do the Alexa bit in the video as I just don't have need for it. I have however added some additional modules since ( the photo is from Dec 2019 ) like Moon Phases. There are loads of modules you can add which can be found here : https://github.com/MichMich/MagicMirror/wiki/3rd-party-modules. The screen powers off at 22h00 and on again at 06h00 when not in use
Howmuch would it cost to make? if you had to sell such a setup ? Alexa Mirror ?
