its a diificult one to work out as its mostly automotive classified spares ,so zero rated ,but on the odds ,probably 10% .if you dont buy clothing and gadgets its worthwhile.

Yeah that can't be right. VAT alone is 15% (actually 16.5% with the ripoff way our government calculates it).

It's easy to calculate. Just take your customs charge, divide that by your order amount and times that by 100.

So in my case they bundled my first two orders. They charged me R497.36 for customs on a combined R3106.- for the two orders. so 497.36/3106=0.1601, times 100=16%.

So I somehow got charged less than VAT, which can only mean that the declared customs value of the items was less than what I paid for them.

Just reading the comments on here it seems that Fastway customs charges are way higher than Buffalo, most likely because of some kind of hidden surcharge. And it seems they are refusing requests to supply an itemized charge sheet (which might be illegal).

he asked for customs charges only ,not vat and customs .as for how its worked out, i import around 17000 items a year so am quite familiar with how it works .but yes on one order even the vat was less than expected .items are scanned via AI so not allways accurate versus description but close enough for the consumer .customs may also be happy with a pre approved percentage across certain price ranges as well .

Well the customs charge that you pay to Buffalo/Fastway includes VAT, so that's what I was referring to.

You said 10% customs charge + VAT, so that's either 25% or 26.5% total charges. That's a lot higher than mine, and I had 2 hoodies, some socks and a bunch of bras and panties mixed in there...

Maybe the customs was less because it was my first order, dunno...

Second/third order I only got charged 11.6% :unsure:

Order after that I got charged 21%.

different categories ,different tariffs ,i suspect they pay a fixed rate thats a happy medium with customs ,if you really sit down and do the maths ,the savings arent phenomenal except on goods you cant get hold of easily .my one order was 4 carburettors which arent available locally ,but are available in the US ,but freight then makes it uneconomical.but because its new to SA its like a kid in a candy store for us with all the pretty options , havent really found anything above what i purchased that would entice me into buying again .if you take each item add vat to it and then add together ,that will give a percentage of extra paid ,but still wont be accurate as freight is subsidised by Temu up to 7 dollars per order (so US media says )whats left will be clearing and duties ,we will never know for sure .also the goods didnt come in on my import permit but on a 0707 number probably ,makes things quicker and easier for them .

Yeah I went to a big Chinese shop the other day and saw quite a few things cheaper than what they are on Temu.

Though Temu is definitely way cheaper than local online shops + shipping...

the gap between couriers will close ,at the moment its the free freight that makes it a winner ,local shops freight can be expensive ,except if they use certain couriers like pudo .paxi etc

i know the local fastway guys fairly well and they are busy ,they are generally not as much on the ball as courier guy but within a day or so .72 hours i feel is still ok for free freight .but i must say there are worse couriers out there .
 
Well went to fastway for my next package, already not delivered today. Will see when they deliver

Strange that you are charged less than VAT though ? Were they VAT-less items ? I think there is something fishy with these charges.
