Your views on optional maintenance plan in new automatic car

Looking at getting a Kia Rio 1.4 TEC Automatic

It comes with 5 year / 100000km warranty and 4 year / 60000km Service Plan.

Question is if I should get the optional Maintenance plan for a new car?
I am quoted R200 extra a month on a 5 year / up to 75 000km (on odometer) Maintenance Plan.

THe items included in MP and not in SP are :
clutch (not available in automatic)
exhaust
globes / fuses
brake pads
brake disks
shock absorbers
v belts
wiper blades
engine
gearbox
differential
turbo assembly
ignition
cooling system
wheel bearings

p/s- bear in mind this will be a new car, and it will be an automatic gear, so no clutch etc.

Should I get it for peace of mind? What was your experience in this?
 
Turbo assembly? There is no turbo in that car...

Any issues with the gearbox, should be covered by the warranty already.
 
I bought the manual one. Up until I was signing all the paperwork, I was determined to get one. But I changed my mind.

As the car is new and under warranty for quite some time, the warranty should cover most things that don't break due to a manufacturing / design fault.

I have no idea what extras may come when servicing my car the last 3 times, but I can't imagine the expense being near the extra R500 per month for who knows how many months.

I'd say only go with a maintenance plan if you plan on doing abnormal mileage, or if you're really concerned about having to dish cash out if things break. Otherwise save the money.
 
I used to work with the people that set these products up. (A very nice family run business - if memory serves)
They calculate those numbers based on actuarial tables and with the manufacturer's input.
It is better to pay ahead now - while you can afford it - than having to cough up the lump sum in 3 years.

It depends on your driving. If you heavy mileage - its not worth it.
 
Brakes and wiper blades are the only things that the maintenance plan will give you extra. Not worth it.
 
I would recommend to take the maintenance plan. Should anything actually go wrong, the cost of the maintenance plan is normally a lot less than you would of had to fork out yourself.

Only problem i've experienced before is when my mothers Peugeot water pump broke, and they wouldnt honour it because the car went for a service about 300km after it was required and subsequently cancelled the motorplan. Fought with them until they eventually reinstated it. Other than that, maintenance plan has always worked out cheaper. My car recently had its engine replaced, didnt pay a cent.

The 5 year/150000km warranty already covers things that go wrong.

Warranty does not cover wear and tear, MP will pretty much cover anything without hassle as long as you service the car within the manufacturers recommendations.

The only thing you should have to pay for with MP is fuel and tyres.
 
Like the others said the only likely things that might be replaced that are not under warranty is the brake pads, wipers, globes and maybe the disks. For R2400 a year that is expensive so rather invest the R200 per month and pay for those parts when the time comes.

Wear and tear items are to be expected. The warranty should cover pretty much every mechanical component though, so the post about having to fork out if something goes wrong outside a maintenance plan is incorrect. The most common items that are claimed under maintenance plans are usually brake pads, wiper blades and globes, and that's not worth R20k+.

He has a service plan to 60k. Warranty to 150k. What wear and tear will he be covered for. MP is only to 75k... Brakes and wipers, maybe twice. So you are saying he must pay R12k extra over 5 years for that?
 
I would consider extending the warranty though. I extended mine from 3 years/100k km to 6 years/220k km for R6,000 more...
 
Two things to remember:

1: Selling a car still in service plan will get you a lot more
2: Its cheaper to extend it if you are still in a service plan.

I rate you get your money back in the resale.

faulty fuel injector - R3000
two faulty door locks - R3000
faulty pcv valve - R2000
new battery - R1000
brake pads & discs - R 2500
new wipers twice - R1000

Warranty would have covered those. As for the others, your mileage may vary. Some people end up never having to replace those items while inside a maintenance plan...
