YouTube cracks down on ad blockers

Watching YouTube, without ads, is like going on an expensive holiday. Treat yourself.

I am, I was paying for Premium Lite but from 10 Nov I have to pay full price. I watch too much YouTube to have ads ruin my life... I mean I'm watching it right bloody now.

Still sucks :(

Actually the opposite. Many okes here use the loophole & get Premium for like R40/R50 bucks something. India or Argentina or Turkey etc.

The R72 is the standard single user anyone is SA can get, zero hoops.

I got the Family One and it wont let me add someone cos theyve been on another family group and theres no way around it, Im just going to cancel Premium or read this thread to find the Hack method cos they annoy me!

I'm using Firefox with Ublock but it's been hit or miss. The ads are mostly blocked currently but sometimes the videos won't play properly. Meh

The hit or miss is if your cache is outdated can be fixed by flushing and reloading Ublock's list:

As for why people should switch away from chromiums ASAP:

Edit: Oh and while you at it, may as well add some Sponsor block as well:

Different browsers, add-ons and extensions. All to try and save R100.

Live a little, be the big spender you always dreamed you could be. Get that youtube premium!

How about NO
You will thank me when they start having ads in premium. WEI make sure of that.

If you say won't happen, look at TV.
Started with Ads between programs then inside then more ads than TV show
Paid TV was meant to curb that but followed suit.

Boycotting the tech that will make ads unskippable is the way to go for me.

Besides, if Google really wanted me to sub they should add features in the paid sub, not remove them. Looking at you "dislike counter" and "Google Music". I paid for Premium for years and loved it esp since I could "back-up" my music on Google Music and listen anywhere. They then went f u and killed it for Youtube Music which is a way worse service.

On free tier, I can download videos and watch whenever wherever I want without the need for the internet. Not premium, you have to still connect and authenticate to be able to watch the Offline videos <-- WTF

You can still do that with Youtube Music.

I wish they'd unbundle the music streaming and charge a lower fee for just YouTube.

You sound like someone who would have gone house to house in the bad old days of broadcast television, unmuted people's televisions, then forced them to watch all the adverts. Clearly all this advert avoidance is a gateway to stealing billions of taxpayer money.
Probably ex-BSA compliance officer

You guys needs to get smart. Just add yourself to your brothers family plan when he isn't looking.

I will leave with

Some of the ads on Youtube are ridiculous.

There's one I keep seeing with an obviously manipulated video of Elon Musk apparently appearing on sabcnews telling me to give him R4700 to invest in some crypto investment algorithm he's written and releasing for South Africans only.

If they're going to insist we watch ads surely there should at least be some sort of vetting process. Some folks will fall for this stuff. It's irresponsible.

That's something I would have considered doing but alas my bro is based in the US & an even bigger cheapskate than me. Refused to get Premium even though he has an M3 (Tesla, not BMW) lol

I suppose most of the stuff I watch is demonetised so it doesn't count.

Most of your vids are ad free? I thought YT might put ads on demonetized vids too, just with (obviously) zero commision to the uploader.

I watch a lot of YT so this cheap subscription is totally worth it. Getting YT Music included means no need for Spotify, so it works out even cheaper.

They aren't allowed to earn money from advertisers on demonitized content. I heard they were doing it for a while but it was just talk. I never actually saw evidence regarding the claim nor did I care to look to be honest. So, as far as I am aware, YT do not make money from demonitized content and adverts are removed from said content.

They love demonitizing schit. I still suspect that there is a window between demonitizing and actually turning the adverts off where YT make 100% of the adrev... I can't prove it though.

I just download the videos, and watch at my lesiure - without adds
That sounds quite counter-intuitive looking at how the average person uses YT in a procrastinating way, unless done for times of expected internet downtime, like being on a flight or something.
