I wake up this morning and notice a friend sent me two YouTube links of 'must see' videos ... So I reach out my duvet, grab the iPad and click on the link ... 'cannot load movie'. The second link does the same and refuses to play

I get out of bed, go to the study, download the mail there and use a PC ..l and both play perfectly.

Everytime I mention the iPad requires a PC for anything, I get slaughtered by iFolk - but here's another example a PC helped and the iPad was pretty useless with whatever limit or restriction just stopped me.

Why can't I view YouTube links?

Its only fair to blame apple...

I think it's because they don't get ad revenue from mobile views.

Does the same in Android, Just select desktop mode on the browser then it works perfectly.

Like bwana pointed out, dont think its Google or Apple in this case, more the uploaded and probably done because of adds.

Assuming Google have fixed the issue as they say they have then it's got to be the person uploading the video. Not sure why they would choose to limit it though.

Here is the Joke re Ads. If I select XBMC (This then streams the media to my TV) it plays on the TV as well, this time no errors or Ads. Guess their system is not perfect :)

I've just installed XBMC for the first time and I'm trying to get to grips with it - I'll add this to my to-do list. :)

I don't get an error message ... other than 'cannot load video'
That's probably because you use the YouTube app instead of Safari? Either way Apple doesn't have control over what permissions uploaders assign to their videos.

I click on the link in the mail application which opens it in the Youtube app ... did you copy and paste into the browser?

The person who sent you the email didn't cc me. I clicked on the link you provided.

Edit: Anyone know where I can get this HDHomeRun in SA he is talking about?

In situations like this don't just assume it's Apple's fault.

Many content providers explicitly published their content to restrict access for any mobile access.

The message you receive from Apple player for non H.264 content and videos limited to only desktop access is the same (yes you can blame Apple for a crappy error message :D)

Best way to confirm if this is the case is to launch YouTube in safari I.e. Google's web mobile player as opposed to the built in one from Apple (yes I know it's a pain, but this is only to confirm if you should be directing anger towards Apple or to the content providers).

In my experience most of these problems are related to access than H.264 formatting.

Btw I personally prefer watching YouTube stuff directly in Safari, as it allows me to adjust the quality I.e. if I'm on 3G I generally switch off HD.

Apple's built in player runs everything in HD and provides no option to change this.

Sadly you can't deactivate the link launching behavior I.e. I would prefer watching YouTube videos in Safari.

I don't use the YouTube app at all anymore.

Little tip for those wondering how to disable it - the app that is - go to Settings>General>Restrictions> and toggle YouTube (under allow) to off. From then on any Youtube link should open in Safari.

Thank you, even I missed that :D guess you need to be a parent to find that one :D

@Dolby -- make this change and you'll be much happier each time you need to watch YouTube links; in this case I have to agree Apple YouTube app is very crap, thanks to Bwana's post we now have a way to avoid it permanently.

+1

Bwana just made the iPad suck less in one short post :)

That Youtube app was one of the reasons I preferred to use the Eee Pad above it. In fact I normally use to fetch the Eee Pad upstairs instead of using the iPad that was right next to me because of it.
