youtube mobile errors

Not sure if this is a Vodacom issue or not, but hopefully I can find out here.

I have a nokia e51, which is 1 month old. At the beginning of august I used it to watch a couple of youtube videos from m.youtube.com (mobile youtube). The quality wasn't great, but it worked. (I used to watch a lot on my previous e61 too)

I hadn't tried for about a month but yesterday I tried to view a few random videos using both the mobile youtube website and the mobile youtube app, but I keep getting the same error 'Invalid URL address' after Realplayer opens and tries to connect to the video. Realplayer is set to use the 'Vlive Streaming' access point, though I get the same error if I use the Internet access point.

Any ideas? Can anyone else who uses Vodacom and/or nokia and/or e51 confirm whether or not they can watch these videos? Any settings I should check?

Just a hunch but see if you can remove the proxy setting and try again.

My proxy settings were removed I think...

Proxy Server Address: none
Proxy Port Number: 0

I'll try using wifi at an internet cafe tonight, if I get the same error then at least I'll know it's not related to vodacom!
 
Vodacom3g, I know this thread is a bit old now, hope you're subscribed or whatever, so you'll see this! Anyway, I can confirm that my youtube videos do work fine using wifi.
So I think either my settings in realplayer are wrong or something is up with nokia, realplayer and vodacoms streaming service. If you have or know anyone who has a nokia (mine is an e51, but most models use realplayer) could you confirm that you're able to stream youtube mobile videos? I'm going to buy an MTN sim to test and will let you know... Thanks!
 
OK, finally got round to buying an MTN sim and, Vodacom3g take note, using my E51 I can stream videos (you tube specifically) with no problem using both wifi and using 3g with MTN.

Vodacom still gives me the error 'Invalid URL address' so the problem is definitely with Vodacom. I will now begin the process of porting to MTN, but you should check it out. I can't believe I'm the only one with this problem?:confused:

regarding 'Content Adaption [re-rendering content] for displaying web pages on mobile phones etc' you'll see that I was the one that initially suggested removing proxy settings to get rid of the banners etc)

Thing is, I'm pretty sure it did work when I first got the e51 in July I think, then it just suddenly stopped working - so something must have changed on your side because nothing changed on mine. I've only now confirmed it works with MTN, which adds to the evidence that the problem is a vodacom one...

A bit more info: it's seems it's actually a combination of vodacom and realplayer - the default software used by nokia to stream videos - I downloaded a program called mobitubia which streams over vodacom ok, but it's not ideal for me. When I'm browsing and I find a youtube link I want to be able to click on it and watch it, not have to open mobitubia and try find the relevant video using keywords etc before I can watch it. With MTN it works perfectly on both realplayer, mobitubia and the youtube app. On vodacom only mobitubia works.

I'm going to research a bit more on google...

Which APN?
 
Ok, seems what is happening is that you connect on the internet APN but when RealPlayer starts it uses the VLive APN (which is actually broken for this at the moment, busy being investigated).

If I recall, you can set RealPlayer to it's own APN.

See if you can force it to the internet APN?
 
To be sure, I deleted ALL my APNs, and then requested device settings from Vodacom using *111#. I now have 3 APNs: MMS, Vodacom4ME and WAP.GPRS.
I don't have Internet.GPRS, which I had before, but maybe it's the same as WAP.GPRS?

I tried setting realplayer to use Vodacom4ME and then WAP.GPRS, and then WAP.GPRS with proxy settings removed -

I received the same error in all 3 cases:
'Unable to connect to server. Invalid URL address'

(It connects to vodacom fine - 3.5G - and web browsing, email works fine)
 
Hey people. I have got the same problem with my Nokia 6234. I initially thought it was youtube upgrading their video service, but as it turns out it's Vodacom's firewalls... My phone displays a "Connecting to VLive!..." message after I selected a video. After that it just says "No response. Try again." I need to watch mobile youtube videos for my Adobe After Effects Tutorials and light entertainment/gaming videos, and since my dad doesn't want me to watch videos using his 2Gig cap (because of the large file sizes), I am practically forced to buy myself data every month which is expensive to say the least. Please Vodacom, fix this for all of us who depend on mobile youtube to watch videos fast & lag free.

Ok that sounded cheesy... At least my connection is fast enough to watch these videos almost lag free

I also have the same problem using my nokia 6234, today I even called customer care thing and spoke to a consultant who told me that the problem is with the content you are trying to stream. But I think its a bunch of bul... Since MTN users can watch youtube mobile without any problems. I think its really time to migrate to MTN at this point cause Im sick and tired of vodacom's scandalous crab.

Well, after the whole "lewd crayfish" incident we do try and stay out of the ocean. :rolleyes:

I tried to get video streaming settings for my nokia 6234 and I was told by sumone from mtn that my phone(nokia 6234) does not support streaming, while I can view and watch vodafonelive's mobile tv service. This is confusing I hope vodacom resolves this problem or whatever it is, I want youtube and I want it now.

This isn't correct. According to Nokia http://www.nokia.co.nz/A4715361
the 6234 supports

Integrated video player for download and playback or for streaming: 3GPP, H.263 video, MPEG-4, and AMR

Also, you can try using mobitubia (google it) which I think can be installed on 6234. Streams youtube videos perfectly on both vodacom and mtn.
Also, if you search myBB I'm sure you can find the APN settings needed to setup streaming on MTN manually...
 
For anyone reading this, there is a new way to stream youtube videos to your phone if your a vodacom subscriber. This can be done by using the opera mini 4.2 mobile browser. Download opera mini to phone at http://mini.opera.com Remember use your handsets native browser. After installing opera mini goto http://m.youtube.com/ to start streaming videos. Search your vid and click watch and you will be taken to your media player on your handset. Tried on my nokia 6234 which is perfect. Did not work on other phones like the samsung j750 dont not why.
