aaaaargh, good news and bad news

good news: sentech returned my call, and extremely pro and friendly on the phone, and gosh someone who knew what they were talking about.

bad news: i now know why my signal quality has gone from 25% to 5% in 3 days!!! he said that due to all the guys who could receive signal but there modems didnt have enough "oomf" to transmit back to the base station and therefore not able to log on..... they have now angled the nodes on the towers facing more towards the ground, therefore not reaching as far and as powerful.

sorts out the problem of those guys not being able to log on, but AAAAAAAARGh im down to 5%, and then he says go buy a tin of pringles, serious!

Lol, yea, i think i spoke to the same guy some time ago, can't remember his name. I told him about the pringles [:D]

he told me to log on to myadsl.co.za and check it out, told him was already converted.... MYADSL ROCKS

haha.. would love to know who this guy is [:D]
Anyways he is correct.
Basically the problem is that due to the antenna elevation angle signals were going too far and modems from far distances were selecting the wrong towers and then couldn't log on due to the power available versus the distance and the help desk gets many calls. [:)]
This also effect tower hopping when mobile.
In most cases antenna elevation have been lowered by 2 degrees to give the required 5.7 km spread except for those that are on the outside of the grid that use the 29km software.

BUT, strangely enough i am surfing as fast as before, ON 5%, damn, and downloads seem no slower

Oh yes, the 5.7 k software may have screwed the guys at 5+ ks but those that have less than 15%, it would slightly improve the situation for them.

I have been operating on 1-5% since I got mywirelss, and the service has been excelent, but how do I know whether I am using the correct software?

and that software is? 5.7 what?

proasm thank goodness you part of this forum, you make our mywireless experience far more..... hmmm enjoyable i thinks.
much appreciated

not enjoyable, just a helluva lot more informed

i think sentech thinks we're a bunch of dumbasses

you had to hear that guy's suprise when i told him that TheRodent coded some linux drivers for the modem....

Robone, the software is the software at the Tower, not your software at the Modem.
You should be running 4.2.1.1 at the modem.

Coincidence or....

DblD has made 55+ posts in 3 days hence the reason for ur drop in signal LOL...

This is very disturbing. I've had calls from a number of Pretoria based friends near nroets' area that now haven't got any signal whatsoever anymore.

Has the zone locator been updated? Probably not.

Has Sentech informed clients that they can expect their signal to disappear? No they haven't.

This is the kind of change that Sentech shouldn't make without consulting, or at least putting in alternative arrangements.

A lot of people had bought, or trialled the modems and had gotten signal, and then went for MyWireless. Now they suddenly don't. This is Sentech's problem. They broke it. They must fix it.

Ideally, a firmware update on the modems should allow users to select the node they wish to communicate with, to sort out the return signal issue.

My signal also just about dissapeared :( I really battle to log on now and get the "remote computer did not respond" error all the time. This was all and well, but my modem still refuses to connect to the tower nearest to us (Helderkruin, 110, 3.9km) and still insists on connecting to 126 which is like more than 5km away. So now what?

I'm one of those friends Rodent's referring to and I'm not happy. Our company owns two modems (512 & 128) that have now been rendered paperweights. We ordered two dish antennas from Poynting that comes to about R1100 each if you get all the cables etc.

I can tell you that my partners are not happy with me spending all this time and money on something that we're still not guaranteed will work.

Like Rodent said, the coverage map has not been updated. According to the map we should get good reception.

groenie, without information there is nothing I or anyone can do.
Please when making a post like this give some details.
What tower, distance, frequency and signal you were getting etc...

ProAsm

Here are some details:
Our office location is at 30 De Havilland Ave in Persequor Park in Pretoria. It is right across the street from the CSIR. In the distance I can see the big Telkom tower that above Sunnyside from the office, so my quess is that were very close to about 5km from Sunnyside, but that is a wild guess.

We had a signal of 22% with 89dBi RSCP last week. The frequency is 205181000 (I think, not at the office currently) from tower 36. We could make full use of our 512kbps connection.

Last week Thursday, our connection dropped, and ever since I get the "remote computer did not respond" problem. The signal is around 14%-18% with RSCP of -95dBi.

This afternoon I did some tests with a directional antenna (coffee tin) and found out that the signal was coming from the wrong direction - east in stead of west, so I assume were getting a signal that is reflected from another building or something like that. I don't know if that was always the case.

My feeling is that we should be able to receive tower 22 in La Montagne as it is quite close, but no luck so far. Can you perhaps tell me exactly where it is located?

Any help would really be appreciated.
Groenie
