OK, so give us some lessons here - have never made a backup - I take it it is not the same as making an image of the HD. You need to back up your data and then restore it afterwards right?
The disk utility does not do backup? I need a 3rd party package?
Buy an external USB hd or case with hd, and copy your files to it.
Then just choose the right option during Leopard installation.
You can do it from the command line if you want but (imo) the best app is SuperDuper.
