Zimbabwe votes in first post Mugabe election

Actually surprised with the results, either there's something wrong with some people over there or the votes were rigged.

Agreed. Hopefully there will be a thorough investigation to determine whether there was rigging or not...

It was a surprise for me too, but what was even more surprising is that even the opposition MDC seems not to have any issues with the parliamentary results, with Chamisa reportedly saying that his MP candidates might not have done well but his personal popularity with the people of Zimbabwe was enough for him to win the Presidential elections.

I am also surprised but it certainly looks like rural areas still support zanu. Also, perhaps vote is for relative stability they have experienced post-bob scenario/

If it's like here (the culture) then people follow one party forever. No matter how ****ty the party is.. they will keep on voting the party.

The so-called new dispensation in Zimbabwe being touted by president-elect Emmerson Mnangagwa seems to have gotten off to a rocky start after riot police officers today stormed an MDC Alliance press conference at Bronte Hotel in the capital, Harare, and almost beat up journalists, ordering them to leave the venue.

Foreign scribes saved the day for locals, as they stood their ground and demanded to know under whose authority the law enforcers were chasing away the journalists.

Miffed by the intimidating police details, who time and again beat their shields using batons to ward off the news men and women, the journalists were not moved, even when a senior police detail called authorities and briefed them that the scribes had refused to budge.

Zimbabwe election: Opposition calls poll results a 'coup'

Zimbabwe's opposition leader has said President Emmerson Mnangagwa's election victory is a "coup against [the people's] will".

Nelson Chamisa repeated his claim that the results announced late on Thursday night were fake, and said he had won Monday's presidential poll.

Responding, Mr Mnangagwa called for peace but said people were free to challenge the result in court.

This was the first election since long-term leader Robert Mugabe was ousted.

Earlier, in a tweet, the president urged Zimbabweans to unite to create "a new beginning" after a vote that was intended to set Zimbabwe on a new path following years of repressive rule.

Well, In other countries you can lose the popular vote by a few % , and still end up with a majority of seats in the lower and upper house as well as win the presidency.

In this case, you just have to look at where MDC's largely came from....the urban centres especially Harare, which has a high population but which doesn't translate to a lot of seats. So, more than a quarter of Chamisa's votes 540k+ votes came from there.

So, am not sure what doesn't seem to make sense?

This guy gets too excited at times, sometimes he even belies his 40 years age, if you didn't know better you'd think he's 25, just yesterday he said in a press briefing that Mnangagwa thinks 10 plus is 40 or something like that to the raptous applause of his supporters, too much amateurish at times.

Senior opposition leader Tendai Biti arrested at border while trying to flee Zimbabwe



Zimbabwean opposition leader Tendai Biti’s lawyer says he was arrested on Wednesday morning by the country’s police - while trying to seek political asylum in Zambia.

Attorney Nqobizitha Mlilio has told TimesLIVE that Biti was arrested “on Zambian soil” at the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia.

As yet‚ there is no confirmation of the arrest‚ nor its basis‚ by the Zimbabwean police.

Police documents supplied by Mlilo‚ however‚ suggest that authorities were investigating Biti for “unofficially and unlawfully” declaring MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa the duly elected president of Zimbabwe‚ in alleged violation of Zimbabwean electoral law.
