I have loaded Zone Alarm as an extra firewall. I keep getting warnings about the following that is trying to connect to my computer (165-130 and the next numbers are different almost every ten minutes):

TCP PORT 135

ds-165-130-215telkomdsl.co.za
165-130-215
TCP Port 2794 TCP Flags:S

Who could this be, and why?

Freshy : Wrong. Zonealarm replaces the standard TCP/IP protocols with its own protocol, and then uses those protocols to communicate. You can test this out by simply deleting the zonealarm folder; if you do so you can kiss your network ability goodbye, and say hello to having to reinstall windows to get it to work again.

The article you linked did have some valid criticisms, but they don't apply to zone alarm. (although, I wouldn't use ZA because of the fact that it eats about 10% of your system resources when running, which seems insanely high for a firewall).

Edit : regarding the actual repeated connection attempts, I suggest you run an anti-virus scan, and then also a spyware/adware checker (most people use spybot S&D and ad-aware.)

Xarog, that article applies directly to ZA. Im no expert but the guy at Sam Spade might just be. Its also not the only article which says so. Its just the only one I could remember off the top of my head.

From a laymans point of view, I have used ZA before and found it to be of zero benefit.

Seriously, I recommend security, but most of the time it causes more problems than its worth. Just get a program installed, let nothing auto run and only scan/use it once in a while.

From what i understand you are using 2 firewalls on windows and this is not recommended as i remember from my windows days, i know they clash and never install 2 anti-virus.

From a personal point of view I wouldn't touch ZA /.Free or /. Pro
If you have time take a look what it does to a windowz TCP/IP Stack / Protocols - It has a mind of it's own.
If you want a personal software firewall take a look at http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Kerio.cfm

My 2c's worth

Outpost

I find Outpost to be excellent - it blocks what you need and provides great feedback and logging as far as open ports and connections are concerned

I'm running Sygate Personal Firewall...It seems to run quietly and doesn't give me warning popups every 20 seconds like ZA and Norton did. Okay, I'm double gloved 'cos of my router firewall, but still it works like a security product should: quietly in the background.

So far it has picked up one real issue, a browser hijacking from some shareware, and the only input required is a confirmation for new software that needs to access the network.

ummm... i use zonealarm security suite 5.5.062 (like... little more than a year old) and i passed the shields up test.. 100%... my security settings arent even close to.. maximum... and the f wall doesnt effect my internet speed 1 bit ( im not updating it to the next versions because a year ago i did... and the speed of my internet decreased dramatically)...

Happy Zone Alarm user here. It was much easier to configure than Sybase and I don't notice any speed impact.

I also use ZA and after about a day or two you will haev configured almost everything you need and will be rid of most of those warning messages.

You must simply either allow (and remeber setting) or block (and remember setting) and you wont have to deal with the same problem twice.

I find ZA to be really good and hardly ever get infected by spyware or viruses anymore with it on.

ZA is bloatware of the worst sort ever since Version 5 ... it is useless crap just like every other so called "security" product shipped by Symantec or McAfee these days.

I use Tiny Desktop Firewall , Avast and Microsoft Defender.

I use to use ZA and switched to Outpost firewall u can do lots more with it puts some paid for firewalls to shame ZA doesnt have half the config options this thing has give it a try ... er dont have a link google it and u'll get it.

Things that belongs in the dustbin: Zone Alarm, Symantec, McAfee

Things that belongs on your network: BSD/Linux firewall/gateway/router.
Hardware: Cisco, Netgear, Billion.
Software: Outpost, Tiny, Kerio.

Antivirus: BitDefender, Trend Micro, NOD32, Avast, AVG, Windows Defender.
Encryption: Google - many good products out there, PGP etc.

Hope this helps a bit

Regards,

Well maby you guys are right, I have hated how bloated ZA is and just how many times it will pop up with messages.

So I downloaded Outpost Pro and Avast Pro... will tell you guys from a ZA users perspective if they are better. I already use Windows Defender beta 2.

Hmm.. and my download actually hit 122kb/s and was around the 100kb mark most of the time, havent had that in a while (Iburst)
