So, in a fit of hopeless over-optimism I decided to take a crack at ZoneMinder (latest, 1.22.3) 'n I think (hope!) that I've mostly got it licked ..except for the pesky actually getting to SEE images off the cameras part.
Here's what I DO know:
- I installed the 'doze monitoring app that came with the 8-channel capture card, fed it 2 cameras and damn me if these li'l things don't half give a pretty damn good image for their size/price! Bottom line, I know I can trust that the hardware CAN give me images.
- Ubuntu_6.06_alternate device manager picks up the capture card, as shown by having 8 channels worth of Philips SAA7130 video broadcast decoders, as well as supporting SAA7134 ALSA and control devices. Also ls /dev/vid* gives me /dev/video1 through to /dev/video8, inclusive.
- I installed by way of default Ubuntu install, followed by the installation guide on the ZM wiki and run through it to the end, without errors (that I can see).
- from there I can get to http://localhost/zm every time and get to the console, which is always there after a restart too so I figure that the daemon is starting as a service every time too.
Problem is that it goes down the drain after that, here's what I DON'T have:
- camera feeds, at least off the 2x CCTV cams jacked into the 8-way card; I'm hoping that I can get images off the USB webcam jacked straight into the box and off the IP camera rather easier than these 2 have been.
- any image at ALL off said cameras, not even with xawtv.
- the [Source] column, which is where the input devices are selected, are always red and the advice on that page isn't making a difference.
Other changes to the base/default install of the box:
- I added Sun Java runtime 6 in the futile hope that that may help.
- chasing down the theory that there's some multimedia thing missing, I'm going to sic the box at Automatix but not holding out much hope of a fix.
So, while I try to convince this thing to now listen to the USB & network cameras this almost totally greenhorn Linux n00b asks for any assistance that might be forthcoming.
