ZTE modem driver issue

This has happened twice in the last year, most recently the other day. I was online and all of a sudden my connection dropped, and a UAC pop up (on Vista SP2) says that Windows needs to install drivers or something or other for the modem (ZTE MF 668). I just clicked cancel, unplugged the modem, put it back in and connected again.

As far as I know everything's installed correctly - it must be otherwise surely it wouldn't work in the first place. Anyone else experienced this?

It looks to me that modem resets itself (it could be power issue). When modem comes back to life the existing drivers are busy waiting to complete previous transaction, but Windows is attempting to install new set of drivers. These new drivers cannot communicate with device (it is locked by previous drivers) then Windows makes decision to look for a new drivers.
Look at the discussion on the power issues.

Hi. Thanks for responding. This all sounds plausible. Do you have a link to this discussion?
