President Jacob Zuma has issued a statement apologising to his family and the ANC.

Zuma - a polygamist - earlier this week confirmed reports of a relationship and the birth of his child with Khoza, daughter of soccer boss Irvin Khoza.

The child was reportedly the president's 20th.

Zuma's office announced earlier in the week that his public engagements had been cancelled for two days so he could rest following a "hectic" schedule.

Here is the statement:

PRESIDENT JACOB ZUMA'S STATEMENT ON THE IMPACT OF EVENTS OF THE PAST WEEK

"I have over the past week taken time to consider and reflect on the issues relating to a relationship I had outside of wedlock.

The matter, though private, has been a subject of much public discussion and debate. It has put a lot of pressure on my family and my organisation, the African National Congress. I also acknowledge and understand the reaction of many South Africans.

I deeply regret the pain that I have caused to my family, the ANC, the Alliance and South Africans in general.

I reiterate that I took responsibility for my actions towards the family concerned and the child.

I reaffirm my commitment and that of my movement to the importance of the family as an institution. I also reaffirm my commitment and that of my movement to the values of personal responsibility, respect and dignity.

I recognise the responsibility of leaders to uphold and promote these values at all times. "

Anything apart from stepping down ain't good enough & just serves to confirm tacit acceptance by the ruling party.

Humping Dumpty indeed.

Well, I'm glad for the apology... if it was sincere and not ordered by the ANC.

But this man was already a worthless candidate going INTO office... so there is not much else to say at this point.

while my general feel is that i would love to have a president other than zuma, calling him to resign on the back of this particular incident was the opposition wasting bullets. throughout the world these kind of things hardly get far in removing someone from power.

that being said, it amazes me that the opposition keeps quite about the tapes that got JZ charges removed. there is seemingly soo much misconduct there yet everyone has let it slide. baffles me.

I'm sure he will do it again.
You mean he'll get caught again. Cause I bet he's got others.
I say force him to take a wife everywhere he goes [like a chaperon].. that should curb his womanizing ways.

and much like sexwale's niece; this is not really an apology. it's more an acknowledgement of fact,

or i suppose i should say his apologetic overtures will only be reflected by his actions. don't hold your breathe.

Sounds like he actually wrote that with the help of some family.
Maybe. Starting sentences with "I ..." 5 times in a row certainly doesn't feel like a professional speech writer wrote it. Then again "to the values of personal responsibility, respect and dignity" sounds exactly like something a pro speech writer would use.

Dont worry Msholozi we forgive you!

We all like to bang around, at least you took responsibility for your actions!

We have notice, that is why SA have one of the highest HIV/AIDS infection rate in the world. Do you not think it is time you and Zuma get your sex addictions under control?

How exactly has he taken responsibility for his actions? Lip service of an apology? BS. He has how many wives? The damage is done, when a criminal commits a crime he goes to prison. This man has taken no action to reverse the damage done to SA's fight against HIV/Aids. So by your idea of taking responsibility, all a murderer has to do to take "responsibility" is apologize and all will be forgiven. He is a sexual deviant and so are you if you do what he does, adding to the problem.

Er... that's the job of the opposition?

Er... Zuma's lawyer and the NPA have had charges lodged against them. The DA is trying to reopen the case against Zuma.

So what? Let a few more people die because of Zuma's actions, I couldn't care less anymore. Be careful what you wish for, eh?

That scenario sounds familiar...oh...'94.

Oh I'm with you guys on this one. Let Zuma do what he wants. Then let his supporters follow his lead. Then praise the man for his repentance, whilst thousands of his followers are essentially given a death sentence. Oh well, at least that's fewer votes for the ANC next time around. Proud of yourselves now, are you? Viva the revolution! Viva ANC!
