Zuma appoints 17 judges

Johannesburg - President Jacob Zuma announced the appointment of 17 judges to the Supreme Court of Appeal, the High Courts and the Competition Appeal Court on Wednesday.

Judge Chimanlal Narotam Patel was appointed deputy judge president of the KwaZulu-Natal High Courts in Pietermaritzburg and Durban.

Most of the appointed had been acting as judges, while three advocates were appointed as judges.

Below is a list of the appointments.

Supreme Court of Appeal:
- Judge Stevan Arnold Majiedt,
- Judge Legoabe Willie Seriti,
- Judge Leona Valerie Theron.

KwaZulu-Natal High Courts, Pietermaritzburg and Durban:
- Deputy Judge President: Mr Justice Chimanlal Narotam Patel,
- Acting Judge Nompumelelo Hazel Radebe,
- Advocate Rishinand Seegobin SC.

Western Cape High Court:
- Acting Judge Monde Ishmael Samela.

Eastern Cape High Court, Mthatha:
- Acting Judge Gloria Nozuko Zukiswa Mjali.

Eastern Cape High Court, Bhisho:
- Acting Judge Belinda Cherryl Hartle.

North West High Court, Mafikeng:
- Acting Judge Nadia Gutta.

Gauteng High Courts, Pretoria and Johannesburg:
- Advocate Hendrik Johannes De Vos,
- Acting Judge Mahomed Hussen Ebrahim Ismail,
- Acting Judge Fayeeza Kathree-Setiloane,

Yip, they are not known to the general public who move outside of the legal fraternity.

Depending on the kind of judgements they give, you may get to hear much more of them in the future.

Hopefully this will help a teensy weensy bit with the existing back-logs, though the 17 were mostly already doing the work, so perhaps more are needed.

There was some inane poster on News 24's Facebook site who blamed the backlog on all the legal actions instituted by the DA against government.

Maybe if the government wasn't so corrupt the DA wouldn't have to play watchdog over it in the first place. Time will tell whether these appointments were chosen because they're willing to toe the party line or actually uphold the letter of the law.

This isn't replacing the system by the way - it's always been the case that the president appoints the judges of the higher courts.

Permanent judges in the higher courts are appointed by the President of South Africa, in consultation with the Judicial Service Commission as well as the leaders of the political parties represented in South African National Assembly. The appointment of magistrates fall under the separate Magistrates' Commission

You really are naive if you dont think the appointments are politically motivated. I never for once said they were corrupt - the Judges are almost No-Bodys, so there are no precedents set for rulings and conduct.
This isnt replacing the system, but you have to start somewhere - and Judges in the con-courts need to have moved up the ranks somewhere.

Ahh, the old 'you're naive if you don't believe my conspiracy theory even though I have no evidence to back it up with' argument.
a) The judges are not nobodies just because you don't know them!
b) South Africa has maintained an independent judiciary, despite being appointed by presidents over the years.
c) The appointees were all recommended by the Judicial Service Commission (which includes members of opposition parties) and only given the official approval by the president.

I agree the process of appointing judges should be more transparent but I don't see any specific evidence that these are anc appointments.
