The Pope and Patriarch of the Greek Orthodox Church of Alexandria and All Africa: Theodoris II on Sunday bestowed President Jacob Zuma with the highest honour the church can give to a foreign national.

Paying a courtesy call to Zuma while doing church work, Theodoris II bestowed Zuma with the Order of Saint Mark.

"With this I give you great blessing," Theodoris II said speaking through an interpreter as he handed Zuma a personal cross and a certificate.

Zuma embraced Theodoris II and his delegation and said the gesture was unexpected.

"Thank you very much for this honour. I thought it was just a visit. I did not know that there was a surprise," Zuma said.

"We appreciate your visit. We believe that you have brought blessings to our country and we are very happy."

It was the first time that the order was bestowed on a South African.

The meeting, arranged by the international relations and cooperation department, was for Theodoris II to tell Zuma about the work Greek South Africans were doing in the country.

Zuma said the Greek community had also made a big contribution to develop South Africa.

"We believe that the spirit that made you come here will remain with us and give us strength," Zuma said.

Theodoris II blessed South Africans and prayed for peace.

"I bless the people of South Africa and I bless you the president of South Africa," he said.

Zuma was flanked by Minister in the Presidency Jeff Radebe and a delegation from the international relations and cooperation department.

He welcomed Theodoris II to his official residence Mahlamba Ndlopfu in Pretoria shortly after 3pm.

"Thank you very much. We are very happy that you are here," Zuma said as he welcomed the delegation.

Theodoris II thanked Zuma for the way he received them and said he was glad to be there.

I don't know, but I suspect you guys are getting the wrong end of the stick here and barking up the wrong tree.

I suspect the Order of St Mark is nothing more than a formal honorific given to any head of State where the Greek Orthodox Church has an established episcopal presence. I'd be surprised if it has anything to do with a particular regard for Zuma, and I'm pretty sure it has has zero religious significance, just as the English Order of the Bath has zip to do with a military order as in days of yore.

These honorific titles can be embarrassing and even ironic. A relative, noted for years of service for tbe struggle against the apartheid state, was inducted into the Order of the British Empire. As a progressive liberal she's an ardent anti-imperialist. Now with an OBE. Cause for some chuckle.

Order of the Bath? Gets me thinking, in Zoem-zoem's case it should be the Order of the Shower...

Zulus (and other black ethnic groups) retain their traditional pre-Christian belief system of ancestor worship in parallel with their Christianity. Which questions their belief to be Christian, or colonial introduced Christianity. They do believe in the divine, the diviner (sangoma) must invoke the ancestors through divination processes. The herbalist (inyanga) prepares the journey for harmony between the living and the dead. In general as per the above their ancestors are Godlike in parallel to the Christian father.

It is estimated that ~60% of the South African population are consulted by traditional healers (or diviners). Their ancestral consciousness dictates the ancestors to be holy spirits (angels/gods) and evil spirits (demons/devils) in contrast to Christianity. I don't really know where Christianity fits into their system... The Zulus incorporated their ancestral believes into their Baptist church.

Churches has a history of siding with corrupt leaders. They like having money.

The question is: would you still go worship there?
 
.. and this is why we say religious folk are by & large not to be trusted and generally avoided if you live in the real world.
