Zuma slams 'Americanisation'

Johannesburg - ANC deputy president Jacob Zuma questioned the "Americanisation" of culture in South Africa, criticising television images of sex and violence during a speech in Johannesburg on Sunday.

"Why are we Americanising ourselves, why?" he asked the official launch of the Creative Workers Union of SA.

"There's more violence on the TV... there's more open sex on TV. What education are you giving to us? Is that part of our culture?"

In what could be interpreted as a reference to Defence Minister Mosiuoa Lekota's remarks about the freedom song, Umshini Wam, Zuma said songs like this were part of South Africa's history.

"(If u erase the songs), you erase the record of history," he said. In response several hundred degelates cheered and banged on metal tables.

He concluded his address with his trademark rendition of "umshini wam". Delegates responded by joining in the song, and cheering and dancing.

So its ok for him to defend his history but Afrikaners may have their history renamed, changed and erased? Lets all sing "death to the whatever" and see how they will react.. oh lets not forget how they did not like De La Ray, which does not encourage killing innocent people.

I hate these idiots.
 
Zuma will say anything that gets him support. He is a total joke.

I don't think Zuma has anything to do with the renaming of things, in fact JZ is quite close to some Afrikaner icons.

Back on topic: JZ is one to talk about sexual promiscuity in the media. It is but by his skillful bending of his own cultural beliefs that he got off on a rape charge. Lest we forget, his culture may have implied rape if he did not have sex with the girl ;) Another thing, please tell us how a shower prevents HIV transmission again, JZ?

He is such an idiot, whats even more scary is that some people in S.A. think he should be the next president. Shows you just how many gulible idiots are really out there.

'They'. Hmm. You really have to stop seeing your opposition as a monolithic enemy, particularly when singling someone out for criticism. Zuma has spoken for the preservation of afrikaans culture before, as well as zulu. He was one of the few in ANC political circles that actually stood up in defense of De La Rey. Make no mistake, I don't like the man, but at least give him his due. Cultural preservation is his most consistent view.

And that would do no good at all. Comrade Blade and company surely have other options. None as high-profile, but you're dealing with a belief system rather than just one man. Sure, after his rape and other antics he may deserve lead poisoning, but that's another story.

Can't believe I'm defending Zuma... but for heaven's sake, people, less rhetoric and more debate, please?
