Zuma undergoes public HIV test

President Jacob Zuma has lived up to his word and undertaken his first public HIV test.

The president is leading a mass testing campaign which the Health Department hopes to officially launch at some point in April.

It is part of government’s plan to step up its response to HIV/Aids following failed programmes from the previous administration.

The launch was meant to take place next week but with Zuma in the United States at the time he did the test early, albeit in a little distress.

All it takes is a needle prick, but when you are not too fond of needles, like Zuma, it can be a bit intimidating.

According to Zuma’s spokesperons Zizi Kodwa, the president closed his eyes, gritted his teeth and showed that he is ready to lead by example.

“He was very, very afraid. He surprised me when I saw him. As a young boy, he used to run away from doctors. Especially when taken for injections. But, he understands, unfortunately, you cannot be tested without needles being used,” Kodwa said.

Kodwa added Zuma was hoping that South Africans would take their cue from him.

Government is hoping to have reached 15 million people by June 2011 through the massive testing campaign.

I don't know if calling the leader of the country "very, very afraid" is a good PR tactic :)

It's a good move by JZ :) Getting people comfortable with HIV testing is fantastic. Hope it catches on.

As far as being afraid, well I was afraid when I went for my test - you know logically you're OK but...
 
So, I wonder, what was the result of the test?
 
Not a bad thing, the more people that get tested the better.

Depends. HIV ELISA results take a while. Rapid test is practically instant. Did he go for an ELISA?

Are you telling me this mass roll-out of tests is for ELISA tests?!?! Free ELISA tests?!? That is going to cost a fortune!
 
to be honest I don't mind HIV at all, its a good way of controlling the population..... at the moment we are encouraging people to have more children and strike more....

And they not very accurate as far as I'm aware.
 
Think it's a good thing that he's showing initiative in being tested, the results ofcourse are protected so we'll never know. Either way, he's making a A LOT more effort than Mbeki ever did.

All tests have a chance of false positives and false negatives. When your bloods go off to a lab for an HIV test they normally run several tests in parallel. For example they will run the ELISA and then do a rapid too just in case. If they don't correlate they run it again. I've seen quite a few falsies before.

Those rapid tests also have expiration dates. I once tested some of the ones that were beyond their expiration dates to see how inaccurate they had become. You can get a lot of incorrect results under those circumstances.

Regardless of how long it takes for the results, it is highly unlikely that we will get to know them.

He is obviously high risk with his "culture", and could you imagine the lab coming up with an HIV+ result and making it public - just not going to happen now is it.
He has/had the power to suppress the criminal evidence linking him to Shabby Sheik's corruption, and if the results of the test is what he'd not want in public view, then it won't be.

Sounds like they are talking about a primary school kid and not the PRESIDENT of a country!

On the presidents agenda for the day:

1. Make a plan with that racist Julias' mouth
2. Put a stop to the singing of racially provocative songs
3. End the shady power deal from which the ANC benefits
4. Get an HIV test

What shall we do? Hmmmm...

10 second HIV test.
