President Jacob Zuma, who is on a state visit to Cuba, said a R210-million credit line package had been finalised for the Communist country in an effort to uplift the economic ties with the country

In his address to the SA-Cuba business forum in Havana yesterday, Zuma said the extension of credit guarantees to Cuba, to the value of R70-million, was one aspect of the package.

"This facility from our government's Export Credit Insurance Corporation will insure South African suppliers for exports to Cuba.

"The modalities of this, including the products, coverage and other issues, are being finalised at a technical level," he said.

Zuma also announced a R40-million contribution towards Cuban agriculture for reconstruction in the wake of the devastation wreaked by a hurricane in 2008.

He said South African exports to Cuba had fallen from R82-million in 2008 to only R1-million in 2010.

Nice to see South Africa is doing so well that we now can help our socialist comrades in Cuba:D

Lets not forget the R1.1bn debt that Cuba owes us that was written off.

I am quite confused as to exactly what Cuba is offering.

EDIT: "Of significant importance is the training of our young people as medical professionals, through Cuba’s generous offer of 80 scholarships each year," he said.

There you go, 80 scholarships, or, if you prefer, R12,500,000 per scholarship of the written off money.
School fee's galore!

In the forensic scientist David Klatzow's book, he refers to a toncilitis done by a Cuban doctor. The doctor was not aware that the procedure is normally done via the mouth into the throat.

This doctor actually cut open the patient's throat from the outside (which is major surgery!!!) to do the procedure.

Well trained, huh? :)

I also read some disasters about cuban doctors.

Puts our 'generous' donation to Haiti of 1 million into perspective - doesn't it?

I like the idea that Cuba can now spend 'our' money on buying things from SA that they cannot pay for.

It all makes sense in a torturous kind of way - sort of like making 3 billion 'profit' from SWC by investing 40 billion.

A question to Zuma:
How many concrete toilets could be built for this WITHOUT blaming the DA?
But then that's politics for you - it doesn't have to make any sense...

It's about supporting their comrades, when Aristide was being deposed Mbeki didn't hesistate to send an aircraft loaded with weapons to support him. I'd imagine it cost quite a bit more than the R1 million that was given to aid the actual people of the country.
